Goals: The objective of this Agreement is to document groundwater levels and water chemistry within and below the Arches National Park Groundwater Protection Zone. This will be accomplished by monitoring groundwater levels and specific conductivity in the Entrada and Navajo aquifer systems at the Courthouse Wash Monitoring Well and making these data available to decision makers and the public.
PP: Public availability of the data will be used by local and state officials.
Overview: . The State of Utah and the National Park Service require current data from the monitoring well to inform decisions on proposed new water uses within the Protection Zone. This Agreement will enable the Utah Geological Survey to collect new data from the monitoring well. The National Park Service will work with the Utah Geological Survey to analyze the data and to identify long-term trends. The State of Utah will use the data to develop and implement sustainable groundwater management policies.
Recipient: Utah Geological Survey
Sub Involv:
Justification: The Utah Geological Survey (UGS) has been conducting geologic, hydrogeologic and groundwater studies throughout the State of Utah since 1931. The UGS collaborated with the NPS and the U.S. Geological Survey to construct the Courthouse Wash Monitoring Well in 2012. In 2013, the UGS documented the drilling activity and the water level and water chemistry data obtained from the well in UGS Open File Report 606. These data have been relied upon by the NPS and the Utah Division of Water Rights to protect groundwater-dependent resources and water rights in Arches National Park. Therefore, they are uniquely qualified to re-establish monitoring protocols at this well and to produce high-quality technical information to inform groundwater management policy decisions. The UGS is also contributing matching funds to this project, so the cost to the NPS is reduced by 50%.

Responsibilities: (1) Reestablish manual water level measurements for the Courthouse Wash Monitoring Well;

(2) Install and maintain two pressure/conductivity/temperature transducers in both completions, the third transducer is for a barometric logger to correct for atmospheric effects; this may require purchasing new transducers depending on condition of existing transducers;

(3) Measure water levels, conductivity, and temperature on an hourly basis and download transducer data;

(4) Process data including corrections for instrument drift and barometric pressure variations, calculate specific conductivity, and calibrate data to manual water level measurements;

(5) Input data into an existing UGS water level database linked to a publicly available web interface, Groundwater Monitoring Data Portal (https://geology.utah.gov/resources/data-databases/groundwater-monitoring/); and

(6) Maintain water level and specific conductivity database and make these data publicly available via an existing web interface.
