OVERVIEW

FY17 YPP funds would go towards getting college and community youth outdoors for recreation and stewardship, and into national parks, satisfying the “play” and “serve” aspects of the “Play, Learn, Serve, Work” initiative. $3,750 would go directly to 11 college outing clubs in the Northeast Region to develop and support the clubs and to reach out to and mentor traditionally diverse and underserved youth organizations, such as the YMCA and Boys & Girls Club. Campus Clubs would plan and execute 3 outdoor trips or events per semester, with at least one trip per semester to a national park, and one stewardship project per semester. Part of the funding would go towards a stipend for a student National Park Ambassador. This would be a college student who acts as a liaison between the Campus Club and an area national park, working with Park Service staff and rangers to arrange visits and stewardship projects and increase interaction between the campus and Park.

The mechanism for disbursing the YPP funds would be through grants to Campus Clubs. Outdoor Nation has a strong track record of granting funds to youth-inspired and youth-led initiatives that get young people connected to the outdoors. A special effort would be made to invite applications from the handful of HBCU’s in the region. Priority for grants will be to Campus Clubs that engage urban, culturally diverse, and underserved populations.
