FY15 Replace palisade members Fort Vancouver NHS Attachment 5: Site Visit notes

Questions posed during the site visit August 11, 2015, with answers in italics:

1. Which gate gets replaced? The north gate, labeled Gate "C" in Attachment 2.

2. Would NPS consider switching to lag screws with wood plugs? No. Use wood dowels except on gate, where metal fasteners are required.

3. Is there a specification for the wood dowels? Red oak, kiln-dry, select grade equivalent

(clear wood), treated in the same manner as waler and picket/king post.

4. How deep is the foundation? Refer to Attachment 3, As-Constructed Historical Drawings.

5. Are pickets and king posts original? Yes, the north wall was constructed in 1966 and the south, east, and west walls in 1971.

6. Is work located only on north wall? No, refer to Attachment 2, Current Conditions, for locations and descriptions of members to be replaced.

7. Are the existing examples of spliced walers on east and west walls an acceptable method? Refer to Detail 1/2 on Sheet 4 of 12 in Attachment 3, As-Constructed Historical Drawings for detail of splice. NPS has followed this detail when splicing existing walers.

8. Has the park ever replaced any pickets? We don’t know. Perhaps when Gate "C" was installed in 1972.

9. Gates A & B are shown on Attachment 2. Does this indicate replacement? No. Refer to Attachment 1, Section 01 27 00 DEFINITION OF CONTRACT LINE ITEMS, 3.1 LIST OF

CONTRACT LINE ITEMS.

10. Are there any examples of decay at ground level? (Example shown in NW corner.)

11. What is an acceptable method for field treatment? Refer to Section 06 13 34 LUMBER

AND POLES, 3.3 FIELD TREATMENT.

12. Are the used pickets and lumber considered to be hazmat? We don't think so. It is the contractor’s responsibility to determine this, handle materials appropriately, and pay for any special disposal costs as part of the contract price.

13. Is a county building permit or any other state or county permit required? No, this is a federal project.

14. Should new pickets and posts match existing top cuts? Yes; replace in kind with flat or pencil top.

15. Should we wrap the new poles with paper? No.

16. Are there as-builts for the utilities running under the palisade wall? Incomplete as-builts are provided in Attachment 6.

17. The site visit was attended by representatives from DSL Builders, Permapost, Ausland

Group, and Oregon Log Home Co.
