This document is a set of specifications for a Portable Barometer Pressure Standard (PBPS) sensor required by the National Weather Service (NWS) to support its Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS) and Upper Air programs.

The key requirements include: the sensor must be calibrated, capable of displaying and transmitting pressure readings in both inches of mercury and hectopascals, have no sharp edges, fit within size and weight constraints, have an external pressure test port, be self-contained and ruggedized for field use, be able to retain configuration settings when unpowered, have specific measurement performance characteristics, operate across a wide temperature and humidity range, communicate via RS232 or USB, have battery backup power, and carry a 1-year minimum warranty. The vendor must be able to supply 275 identical units (or 467 units including the Upper Air program) with shipping costs included. The government may verify compliance through field and laboratory testing.
