Goals: This project will provide technical and logistical support to other projects that will deliver data on habitat conditions, trends and updated assessments of the Rio Grande and associated watersheds within Big Bend National Park and the Rio Grande Wild and Scenic River. The project will ensure the safe and timely execution of projects that will provide the park Hydrologist and Chief of Science and Resources Management with the information needed to update river and riparian vegetation management plans and strategies. The project objectives include logistical support to a project that will survey the geomorphology of the Rio Grande within the Park. This project will also provide logistical and technical support to biological and hydrological condition assessment surveys of the Rio Grande and associated uplands within Big Bend National Park and the Rio Grande Wild and Scenic River. Findings from this project will assist with the park’s decision and planning processes for the Rio Grande. In addition, the project will also provide logistical and technical support on removal of invasive exotic vegetation along 12 miles of the Rio Grande riparian corridor within Big Bend National Park
PP: This project will provide jobs to a gateway community by hiring local shuttle drivers and technicians. The project engages recipients and partners in shared environmental stewardship of a popular park, sky island, and fishery. The project assists in the creation, promotion, facilitation, and improvement of the public’s understanding of natural, cultural, and recreational resources of Big Bend National Park and the Rio Grande Wild and Scenic River. Science-based management of exotic species, which can obliterate campsites and dewater streams, will protect public access to parks and streams. The project will utilize science to identify best practices to manage a popular park and fishery and will ensure the public has access to recreational opportunities involving birdwatching, fishing, and boating.
Overview: Big Bend National Park and Rio Bravo Restoration will perform resource management and science projects on the Rio Grande and associated ecosystems as part of an adaptive management and science-based approach to identifying best practices for land and water resource management.

Planned projects include 1) control of invasive exotic vegetation along 12 miles of the Rio Grande River, 2) riparian vegetation surveys along the Rio Grande River, and 3) scientific investigations in geomorphology and health of fisheries. Rio Bravo Restoration will provide personnel for logistical and technical support for these projects, including ecological and geomorphic science technicians, experienced river and backcountry safety and logistics personnel, and shuttle drivers.
