About this file
This is an aggregate specifications document issued by the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) Northwest District that establishes material standards and grading requirements for various construction and maintenance applications. The specifications detail requirements for eight primary aggregate categories and two cinder specifications, including graded aggregate for bituminous surfaces (Grade 1), aggregate for surfacing (Grade A or B), aggregate for seal coats (Grade B2 and Grade C), snow and ice control chips (limestone only), snow and ice control sand (river sand or manufactured sand), Type 1 base aggregate (limestone/dolomite only), clean cinders (screened boiler slag or blast furnace slag), dirty cinders (unscreened boiler slag or blast furnace slag), and trap rock for rock blankets. Each specification includes detailed sieve analysis requirements with specific passing percentages at designated sieve sizes to ensure material consistency and performance standards.
The document establishes quality control parameters for all aggregate materials, including restrictions on deleterious rock and shale content (maximum 15 percent for base materials), plasticity index limitations (maximum of six for fractions passing No. 40 sieve), and visual approval requirements for slag-based materials. Pre-bid product approval is available through Tonya Lohman, MoDOT Northwest District Maintenance and Traffic Engineer, at 816-387-2438, allowing potential suppliers to submit samples for acceptability review prior to bid submission. The specifications reference relevant sections of MoDOT's standard specifications and construction standards, providing comprehensive technical guidance for material sourcing and quality assurance throughout aggregate procurement and project delivery.

Spec. CC
Clean Cinders: Screened Wet Bottom Boiler Slag and/or Air Cooled Blast Furnace Slag, preferably black/brown in color, as visually approved by a MoDOT representative. Washing of the material may be done but is not required. Material should be screened so nothing exceeds a 1/8” maximum size and cleaned so fines are less than 3% passing the No. 200 sieve.
It is not required, but questions about the acceptability of a potential product/source or to inquire about submitting a product sample for pre-approval prior to bid submission, contact Tonya Lohman, MoDOT Northwest District Maintenance and Traffic Engineer, at 816-387-2438.
Spec. DC
