SELECTION
JUSTIFICATION
The Recipient has been identified as employing uniquely qualified staff with specialized skills and expertise on the subject matter.
Wayne State University, Department of Biology; specifically, Dr. Tom Dowling (Principal Investigator) is uniquely qualified to characterize genetic variation in razorback sucker (RBS) and bonytail using a variety of methods.
These qualifications are based on a proven track record of rapid genetic data acquisition for imperiled native fishes, high levels of scientific productivity, and supplying timely feedback to resource management agencies. Specifically, he has:
1. Successfully demonstrated these prescribed techniques on populations of RBS within the proposed study sites. Samples and data from previous years are cataloged and stored at his facility, and his continued access to past samples will allow for greater analysis using a long term data set.
2. Worked for twenty plus years monitoring the genetic diversity of RBS within its historic range. This continued involvement in the matter has established partnerships with resource managers to facilitate cooperative research throughout the Colorado River Basin.
