215-597-5949 Goals: A. Project Goals – The National Park Service and Old North Foundation work together to preserve the integrity of Old North Church, a National Historic Landmark designated by Congress for inclusion within Boston National Historical Park, as a historic structure for the benefit of the American people. In order to ensure the continued use, accessibility, and safety of Old North Church, the National Park Service seeks to assist Old North Foundation to complete certain projects within and around the exterior of the church.
B. Project Objectives – This project addresses cyclic maintenance needs of Old North Church, specifically the restoration of aging windows within the church. Serving 500k visitors annually, this site requires improvements to modernize infrastructure and address deferred maintenance. This project will restore a total of 41 exterior windows.
| PP: This project promotes greater public and private participation in historic preservation programs and activities. Caring for this historic property’s windows promotes resource stewardship ethics in the project’s participants. |
| Overview: This project will preserve 41 exterior windows of the Old North Church. The project includes: |
1. Use of scaffold to access windows.
2. Removal of lower sash for painting not in place - upper sash to be painted in place.
3. Full paint prep to existing paint layer via sanding, cleaning, etc.
4. Spot glazing to be applied where needed.
5. Application of full alkyd primer, followed by two coats latex finish paint, brush applied.
6. Cleaning of glass, interior and exterior.
7. Re-installation of windows and repair of any problems with sash cord, weather-stripping, locks, etc. that need to be addressed or corrected.
In some areas the paint has been worn away exposing the wood to rot. These windows will be repainted, select broken panes will be replaced with replica glass. Sash rope, which continually breaks under the weight of the windows will be replaced with stronger material. Flimsy locks will be replaced with more removable interior jams to secure the building.
