| Goals: This project will expand opportunities for natural resources based recreation and education on the Chesapeake Bay at Sandy Point State Park, a designated Chesapeake Bay Gateway. The project builds upon a Capital Improvements Program construction project currently underway that includes reconstruction of the South Beach Access Plaza, renovation and expansion of the nature center facility, installation of a nature-themed playground, and extensive landscaping of the project site. The project will expand these improvements towards revitalizing the entire South Beach waterfront, enhancing visitor services, restoring riparian habitat, and developing and implementing bay stewardship education and interpretive programs in the South Beach Area of Sandy Point State Park. This will make Sandy Point a premier Chesapeake Gateway hub. |
| PP: This National Park Service Chesapeake Office (NPS Chesapeake) award supports these particular public purposes: (1) the project engages recipients, partners, communities, and/or visitors in shared environmental stewardship; and (2) the project assists in the creation, promotion, facilitation, and/or improvement of the public’s understanding of natural, cultural, historic, recreational and other aspects of areas such as ecological conservation areas, and state and local parks. |
The National Park Service designated Sandy Point State Park as a Chesapeake Bay Gateway in 2001. Sandy Point State Park is located approximately 30 miles from both the major metropolitan areas of Washington D.C. and Baltimore and approximately 10 miles from Annapolis, the State capital. With the proximity to these population centers and easy highway access, over 1,000,000 people visit Sandy Point annually, and the park’s summer weekend visitation frequently exceeds 10,000 visitors.
Overview: This project will accomplish the next phase of work needed to make the South Beach Area of Sandy Point State Park a model natural resources based waterfront park, educational area and Chesapeake Gateway. This involves four components:
(1) Design, fabrication and installation of exhibits for the recently renovated 700 square foot nature center with a focus on natural resources and Chesapeake Bay stewardship;
(2) Preparation of a concept plan and rendering to expand the recently renovated nature center to include the entire Concessions Building, including architectural plans and exhibit plans;
(3) Development of a site master plan for the South Beach Area of Sandy Point State Park, encompassing approximately 25 acres to include a trail (portions to be ADA-accessible), activity stations, interpretive panel locations, habitat restoration areas (forest, meadow, wetland, dune) and native “Bayscaping” areas that promote natural resources conservation, environmental restoration, and Bay stewardship themes; and
(4) Renovation and modernization of the South Beach bathhouse.
This builds on existing capital and critical maintenance projects to elevate Sandy Point State Park as a premier destination for recreation and environmental education on the Chesapeake Bay.
