| Goals: A. Project Goals – To engage youth in career development opportunities at Lowell National Historical Park with projects that are local to the city they live in, the youth gain an appreciation for historical and cultural resources and a sense of accomplishment and pride when they have improved infrastructure that is part of their daily lives. They share what they learn with the community, their neighbors and family members, and their peers, and in doing so, become stewards of their community as well as of public lands. |
B. Project Objectives –This year 4 youth will be engaged in intensive paid apprenticeships to develop professional skills and knowledge in specialized trades, while building an understanding that the National Park Service belongs to them. They will work on projects on historic buildings and other infrastructures, further developing the professional trades’ skills they have chosen to focus on, in their studies at local vocational programs.
| PP: The principal purpose of Spindle City Corps is to support the government’s objective to provide opportunities for youth to learn about their surrounding environment and gain job skills while working on projects at a National Park Service site. These youth are among those who may otherwise have limited access to experiences at NPS sites. By employing these youth, they are not only spending time in their local national park, but they are involved in preserving the stories of their hometown through stewardship and skills development. Working as members of a Spindle City Corps program will develop youth into educated and active members of the community, who understand the functions of local civics as well as the value of the city they call home. By the end of the project, participants will have developed a sense of civic pride in their city, and through doing so, will become advocates for stewardship of their neighborhoods and communities. |
