What is JPSS?

The Joint Polar Satellite System, or JPSS, is the backbone of global satellite-based observations and products that feed U.S. forecasting models

Right now, our primary focus is on increasing data availability through the launch of our next satellite, JPSS-2, and supporting partner missions

The JPSS Program consists of:

▪ Five satellites (two in orbit and three in production), each with at least four instruments

▪ A multi-mission ground system supporting JPSS and multiple partner satellites

JPSS will provide a continuous on-orbit presence from 2011 through 2038

● Include the sustainment of the existing JPSS Ground System and handle long-term approach to implementing multi-mission LEO ground system services

● Future LEO Ground Services (FLGS) describes the next iteration of the system as whole, but does not denote a presumption of singular or multiple contract(s)

● Expect FLGS will evolve using existing and new elements to ensure NESDIS’ LEO weather satellite mission requirements are fulfilled

FLGS Vision

● JPSS Ground Project supports world-wide Infrastructure and multi-agency/international agreements

● Efforts to modernize and adapt to new technologies are under way

● Opportunities to address the future of Polar Ground are the purpose of this Industry Day

● We encourage your ideas to help shape the way JPSS will manage, maintain and sustain ground services in the future
