Design, Fabrication, and Installation of a Planar Aerospace Test Bed at NASA Langley Research Center, Hampton, VA Statement of Work

1. Background The Planar Aerospace Test Bed will be used to conduct simulations of rendezvous and docking operations in a 3-Degree of Freedom Environment with small satellites.

2. Project Scope The work defined here will cover the design, fabrication, and installation of the Planar Aerospace Test Bed at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia.

3. Product Requirements Table 3.1 Aerospace Test Bed Requirements

Requirement Number
Summary
Requirement
OAAN-890
Surface Level
The Flat Surface Table shall be level to gravity to with in 2 arcseconds.

Rationale: The surface must be sufficiently level to prevent a disturbance force due to gravity from overwhelming the control system.

OAAN-891
Surface Finish
The Flat Surface Table shall have a surface finish of 16micron rms or better

Rationale: The surface finish is important for the air bearings to operate in an ideal situation where it would influence the air gap.

OAAN-892
Surface Local Flatness
The Flat Surface Table shall have a local flatness not exceeding 2.5microns per 40mm (9.8E-5inch per 1.57 inch).

Rationale: The local flatness, which is the flatness under the bearing at any one time (40mm diameter circle), should be less than 50% of the design air gap (5microns). Therefore a flatness of 2.5microns/40mm is necessary to maintain the very low friction coefficient.

OAAN-1071
Nonmagnetic Table
The Flat Surface Table surface shall be nonmagnetic.

Rationale: A magnetic or ferrous surface could cause interference with the magnetic docking subsystem.

OAAN-1072
Table Railings
The Flat Surface Table shall have nonmagnetic railings around the perimeter.

Rationale: The railings will prevent the test articles from falling off the edge.

OAAN-1172
Table Size
The Flat Surface Table shall have nominal dimensions of 10ft by 16ft.
OAAN-1203
Table Flatness
The Flat Surface Table shall be flat to within +-0.001 inches.
OAAN-1219
Table Weight
The Flat Surface Table shall weigh less than 5000lbs.

Rationale: The weight of the table must supported by a 6" concrete foundation in the facility. Heavier tables may require additional cost due to the requirement to modify the concrete foundation. This recommendation was provided by CMOE.

4. Contractor Tasks

4.1 The Contractor shall design the aerospace test bed.

4.2 The Contractor shall fabricate the aerospace test bed.
