Statement of Work
Scope This statement of work (SOW) seeks the measurement of the thermal conductivity of both a carbon/carbon (C/C) and graphite. Both the C/C and graphite specimens will be provided by the government. The purpose of the graphite is to establish the accuracy of the measurement capability. The government intends to award to more than one of the lowest priced technically acceptable vendors.
Background The government requires the ability to accurately measure thermal conductivity of high temperature refractory composites such as carbon/carbon. Prior attempts to measure thermal conductivity have resulted in wide scatter in the properties.
This SOW will provide thermal conductivity of a known graphite standard to establish the accuracy of the test facility, as well as the unknown C/C.
Objective The objective of this task is to 1) determine the thermal conductivity of C/C, and
2) establish the accuracy of the measurement by also measuring the thermal conductivity of a known graphite standard. It is required that the testing be done in an inert or vacuum environment (non-oxidizing). Though a complete temperature range is preferred (RT to 4000°F), subsets of that temperature range will be considered. There is no preferred measurement method, and all will be considered.
Contractor Task Measure the through-the-thickness thermal conductivity of carbon/carbon (C/C) and graphite from room temperature (RT) to 4000°F in an inert environment. It is acceptable to propose only a portion of the desired temperature range of RT- 4000°F. If a transient method such as laser flash is used to measure thermal diffusivity, then measurement of specific heat over the temperature range is also required. It is acceptable to provide the required measurements using one or multiple measurement techniques. C/C and graphite specimens will be provided by the government.
Deliverables Data as a function of temperature shall be provided to the government.
