Specifications and Statement of Work for X‐ray Source Shielding Installation:
A CAD drawing of the setup is posted with these specifications.
X‐ray emission requirements. The x‐ray system has already been secured, it has the parameters below.
The lead shielding shall be able to contain the produced x‐rays to within regulatory safety standards.
1. X‐ray emission shall be continuous. Pulsed x‐rays are not acceptable.
2. Source shall be capable of 320 keV energy x‐rays or higher, but also tunable to produce x‐rays of lower energy as needed.
3. Minimum x‐ray tube current of 30 mA. A high flux of high energy x‐rays is an absolute requirement.
4. Spot size must be no more than 1 mm in diameter. An adjustable focus is desirable.
5. A Gaussian beam profile is required to focus maximum intensity on the sample.
6. Dose rate must be 1 mGy/s or higher at 1m from the sample at 320keV x‐ray emission with 1mA of x‐ray tube current. 80 cm is the minimum distance possible to the sample.
Box has been designed with the following dimensions:
1. Lead paneling is on all 6 sides. Box is 48” x 70” at its base and 70” tall with no less than 1” thick lead walls all around to contain reflected x‐rays.
2. Two sliding access doors are required, one on each of the side walls measuring 70”x70”. The lead panels for the doors need to be 2.5” thick, a minimum of 24” wide by 20” tall, and aligned with to one side of the wall with the vacuum chamber (see drawing). The very bottom (including the rail) shall be 44” off the ground, or 44” from the outer side of the floor enclosure panel. The very top needs to be no less than 64” off the ground, for a total door height of 20”. Taller is permitted, so long as the bottom position of 44” is maintained. No automated opening is required if the rails permit opening by hand. These are for accessing the vacuum chamber and the x‐ray source for adjustment and sample changing. A model of the vacuum system is included with the CAD drawing.
3. A main access door that makes the 60.5” x 86.0” wall furthest from the closed sliding access doors.
Sliding or hinged openings are both acceptable.
4. The vacuum system is on its own wooden base with wheels. A guide rail system to move the system back into the exact alignment with the x‐ray tube is necessary. If necessary, the wheels on the base can be changed to interlock with the guiderails.
5. All necessary interlocks to meet safety standards, including one on each door to cut power in case of breach. Locks for door is preferred to prevent accidental opening during operation.
6. All necessary baffles to feed x‐ray source cables and any data collection cables into the system, preferably through the top. There also needs to be a baffle or a 2‐3/4” vacuum fitting feedthrough at the bottom opposite the main access door for the vacuum rough pump line. Vacuum must be maintained at all times during the experiments, so the system cannot be pumped down and then have the line removed before x‐ray exposure.
sides read: Guiderail for sliding sample access side. Must be at least 2.5" to block 320kV x-ray beam.
Castors for the whole system would be great if possible.
