Two 2022 Heliophysics Explorer Final Announcements of Opportunity (AO)s Released
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Science Mission Directorate
(SMD) has released concurrently two Heliophysics Explorers Science Investigations solicitations or Announcements of Opportunity (AO). The Heliophysics Explorers Program conducts
Principal Investigator (PI)-led space science investigations relevant to SMD's Heliophysics programs and manages both solicitations. Heliophysics Explorers investigations must address
NASA’s strategic heliophysics science goals:
• Explore the physical processes in the space environment from the Sun to the Earth and throughout the solar system;
• Advance our understanding of the connections that link the Sun, the Earth, planetary space environments, and the outer reaches of our solar system; and
• Develop the knowledge and capability to detect and predict extreme conditions in space to protect life and society and to safeguard human and robotic explorers beyond Earth.
AOs Release Date: September 7, 2022
Pre-proposal Conference Date: September 30, 2022
Required Notice(s) of Intent Due: October 24, 2022
Proposal(s) Due: December 8, 2022

Specific categories of organizations and institutions that will be welcome to respond include, but are not limited to, educational; industrial; and not-for-profit organizations; Federally Funded Research and Development Centers (FFRDCs) including the Jet
Propulsion Laboratory (JPL); University Affiliated Research Centers (UARCs); NASA Centers;
and other Government agencies. Non-U.S. organizations may participate on a no-exchange-of-funds basis. Both U.S and non-U.S. participation is subject to China restrictions described in
Sections 4.2.2 and 5.7.1 of each AO.
All interested parties must read the final 2022 AOs carefully for changes from the draft AOs and prior SMD AOs. All proposals to the final AOs must comply with the requirements, constraints, and guidelines contained within those final AOs.
The Science Office for Mission Assessments (SOMA) hosts the official “2022 Heliophysics
Explorers” website that provides further information, including the SMEX and MO Program http://nspires.nasaprs.com/ http://nspires.nasaprs.com/ https://go.nasa.gov/HPSMEX22 https://go.nasa.gov/hpexmo22
Libraries and SMEX and MO Question & Answer (Q&A) pages. SOMA will post inquiry responses and the Pre-proposal Conference agenda and related updates on its website at:
https://explorers.larc.nasa.gov/HPSMEX22/.
Anonymity of persons/institutions who submit questions will be preserved. Proposers are encouraged to send comments and questions early so that they may be fully addressed. Questions posed at least one week before the Pre-Proposal Conference will be addressed in the Pre-
Proposal Conference presentation or the SOMA page Q&A. The deadline for all questions is two
(2) weeks before the proposal due date.
Please email 2022 SMEX AO questions and comments to both Dan Moses, Program Scientist
2022 SMEX AO, dan.moses@nasa.gov, and Chauncey Wu, Acquisition Manager 2022 SMEX
AO, k.c.wu@nasa.gov. The email subject line should read “2022 Heliophysics SMEX AO” to be routed properly.
Please email 2022 Heliophysics MO AO questions and comments to both Dan Moses, Program
Scientist 2022 MO AO, dan.moses@nasa.gov, and James Florance, Acquisition Manager 2022
MO AO, j.r.florance@nasa.gov. The email subject line should read "2022 Heliophysics MO AO" to be routed properly.
Any costs incurred in preparing submissions in response to this email or to the full AO(s) are incurred completely at the submitter's own risk.
