About this file
This document is a Statement of Work (SOW) for vibration and post-vibration verification testing of a 20W 20K cryocooler. The contractor shall perform vibration testing per the GEVS-SE specification, including designing and fabricating a vibration test fixture, conducting structural analyses, writing a vibration test plan, and performing vibration testing on the cold and warm modules. The contractor shall then perform a leak, proof pressure, and spin test to verify cryocooler survivability, and conduct a functional test to verify cryocooler performance at cryogenic temperatures. A summary report of the vibration testing and post-vibrational cryogenic test data shall be delivered to NASA. The planned timeline for this activity is from December 2024 to August 2025.
The related federal contract opportunity is a pre-solicitation notice for a modification to an existing SBIR contract to add the requirement for the vibration and post-vibration verification testing of the 20W 20K cryocooler, as described in the attached SOW. NASA Glenn Research Center intends to issue this sole source modification, as they have determined that only one responsible source can meet the agency's requirements. Interested organizations may submit their capabilities and qualifications by October 25, 2024, to be considered for a potential competitive acquisition.

10/09/24 Statement of Work Vibration Test
1.0 Shipment and Vibration Test
Following the NASA Characterization and Endurance Test (currently scheduled to conclude in May 2025) for the 20W at 20K cryocooler, the contractor shall perform vibration and post-vibration verification testing for the cryocooler. Vibration testing is the one aspect that needs to be added to raise the technology readiness level from 5 to 6.
1.1 Vibration testing of the 20W 20K Cryocooler shall be conducted per GEVS-SE, General Environmental Verification Specification for STS and ELV Payloads.
1.2 The contractor shall design and fabricate a vibration test fixture(s) and install the hardware to couple the cryocooler components (Three compressors, five recuperators, one turboalternator, tubing, valves) to vibration fixtures. This fixture will serve as support for the cryocooler for all future operations.
1.3 The contractor shall provide structural analyses to ensure that the structural design of the cryocooler is adequate to survive the GEVS-SE specification. The analysis shall be delivered to NASA.
1.4 The contractor shall write a vibration test plan and procedures for the cryocooler for NASA’s approval.
1.5 The contractor shall perform vibration testing for the cold and warm modules. This may be completed individually or simultaneously.
1.6 The contractor shall perform a leak, proof pressure, and spin test to verify cryocooler survivability following the three single-axis vibration tests (x, y, and z).
1.7 The contractor shall reduce, analyze, and interpret the vibration test data and write a summary report of the cryocooler’s survivability of the vibration testing. This report shall be delivered to NASA,
1.8 The contractor shall perform a functional test post-vibrational testing, verifying cryocooler performance at cryogenic temperatures per the test matrix in Figure 1. A test data report shall be deliver to NASA.
1.9 The contractor shall support NASA in monthly telecons, beginning with Award Authority to Proceed.
1.10 The contractor shall document assumptions and testing processes in the proposal relevant to the cryocooler vibration fixture fabrication, vibration test, and post-vibrational cryogenic test.
The planned dates for this activity are as follows. These dates are nominal and subject to change based on hardware availability.
Design and fabricate Cryocooler Test Fixture – (Dec 2024 -April 2025) Re-Package Cryocooler for Vibration Testing, Conduct Vibe Testing – (May-June 2025) Summary Report of Cryocooler Vibration Testing (June 2025) Post-vibrational thermodynamic performance testing (June-August 2025) Ship Cryocooler to GRC – (August 2025)
