Version 11-30-2016-1 FAR Part 11—Describing Agency Needs

PURCHASE DESCRIPTION

1. Statement of Need and Purpose: The Laboratory of Neuropsychology investigates higher brain functions such as perception, memory, and social reward. We will be working on a series of studies that investigate the neural underpinnings of socially motivate behavior. This work in nonhuman primates requires recording single units from deep brain structures in nonhuman primates interacting under social circumstances.

The requirement is to obtain a wireless single-unit recording system that works with electrodes designed in the Laboratory of Neuropsychology to reach deep brain targets (Leopold brush electrode arrays). A major problem with wireless solutions for nonhuman primates is the size of the implant, susceptibility of the system to repeated connections, and mechanical damage. We require a system that allows elimination of high density connectors. This can be done by direct wire-bonding our brush arrays to a preamplifier/multiplexor that can be permanently implanted with the electrodes.

2. Background Information and Objective: This is the first acquisition of a wireless recording system for the Section on the Neurobiology of Learning and Memory. This purchase is to advance the capabilities of the section from seated, head-fixed recordings to freely moving animals, which will enable far greater flexibility in the study of social behavior. Without a wireless recording system, the Laboratory of Neuropsychology would be unable to expand its ability to research the neurophysiology of relationships between conspecifics.

3. Generic Name of Product: Wireless single unit recording system for nonhuman primates.

4. Purchase Description: 128-channel wireless recording system – W128 Wireless Headstage, 4 x 36 pin MillMax, Gain 140, Frequencies F1; W128 Wireless Radio Receiver, Analog Output, Total System, Gain 100, Frequency F1; TDT PZ5 31ch cable or Bank B of W64; TDT PZ5 W64 32ch Bank A cable; EIB, 4 x 36 pin MillMax to 4 x A9707 36 Pin Omnetics Female Cables; Large Animal PVC Protective Enclosure for W128 Headstage; Shipping.

5. Salient characteristics

• Minimum of 120 single-ended wireless recording channels for single-units

• Customization option to wire-bond brush electrodes to implanted multiplexor to achieve a very low-profile system by avoiding high density connectors. (Should also support high-density connectors, e.g. Omnetics or MillMax).

• 3-meter minimum range

• 25 k samples/second/channel minimum

• 0.8 to 7 kHz minimum input bandwidth

• 4 mV p-p input range minimum

• 6.5 Mohm or greater input impedance
