Studies will also include the administration of wild-type and attenuated reassortant viruses to healthy adult volunteers in order to assess pathogenicity, virulence and their suitability for use as a challenge virus in efficacy studies. These wild-type viruses will be used to challenge vaccinated adult volunteers in order to assess the extent of immunity induced by candidate vaccines.

Studies will be limited to adult subjects although influenza viruses can cause respiratory disease in people of all ages. The studies of live attenuated pandemic influenza vaccines will be conducted in accordance with the recommendations of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in an inpatient facility designed to prevent the transmission of influenza viruses.
