Statement of Work
Safe Kids Worldwide (SKWW)/NICHD Safe Infant Sleep Education and Outreach Project
A recent SKWW survey found that many coalitions were already addressing safe infant sleep by creating their own messages and materials, which often did not comply with all the current American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) safe infant sleep recommendations.
To capitalize on existing infrastructure and administrative efforts and on evidence-based safe sleep messages and activities, NICHD was invited to take part in SKWW’s mini-grant program to support coalitions in conducting community outreach, education, and engagement activities related to safe infant sleep. Working with SKWW allows NICHD to ensure that the evidence-based recommendations from AAP are appropriately and accurately communicated to communities around the country.
This effort involves multiple steps including:
• SKWW will provide existing online Program Management Tool (PMT) modules as a framework for the safe infant sleep module.
o NICHD will provide expertise for the development of the safe infant sleep module in the SKWW PMT.
o Once approved, SKWW will incorporate the safe infant sleep module into its PMT offerings for coalitions.
• SKWW will create an online toolkit for mini-grantees.
o The toolkit will include social media messages and graphics, Safe to Sleep® publications, safety checklists, and other resources that coalitions can use for their activities.
o There may also be one or more co-branded items with both Safe to Sleep® and SKWW logos.
• SKWW will conduct its standard mini-grant cycle, disperse and administer stipends, maintain PMT module, and collect and distribute materials and resources to coalitions that want to address safe infant sleep in their communities.
• SKWW will collect standard metrics on safe infant sleep mini-grant activities, such as number of people reached, number of materials disseminated, etc. Coalitions will be required to submit closing reports on their activities, including pre- /posttests and other metrics, as appropriate.
• SKWW and NICHD will evaluate the activity at the end of the mini-grant cycle.
This unique collaboration offers NICHD with a ready-made nationwide infrastructure for spreading safe infant sleep information. SKWW coalitions aim to reach as many members of their community as possible with a range of safety information. Coalition leaders and members are motivated intermediaries trained in community outreach, making them ideal messengers for life-saving safe infant sleep information. Further, coalitions are already trusted within their communities; this insider status is critical to ensuring that NICHD’s safe infant sleep messages are heard and adopted. Insights gained from this activity can be evaluated and applied to more standardized outreach effort that NICHD can offer for other organizations and groups to do on their own.
