STATEMENT OF WORK

Equipment Maintenance

A. Background Information

The Laboratory of Systems Biology (LSB) investigates basic aspects of innate and adaptive immune function, with an emphasis on how the body, and more specifically, different cell types within the body discriminate between self and non-self. This discrimination is the crucial mechanism by which the body patrols itself and is able to respond appropriately upon infection by a microorganism. Using computational biological approaches coupled with more traditional biological experimentation, the LSB strives to build models of how the individual cells comprising the immune system play their part in differentially responding to the varied immunological stimuli presented to them by the myriad of known pathogens. These models allow us to make informed predictions as to how the body will respond when challenged by, for example, a novel vaccine.

In order to study this it is imperative to know which cell types are present in a given experimental sample and the LSR Fortessa and accompanying Facs Flow Supply System allow us to discriminate between these cell types by analyzing markers on the cell surfaces which are indicative-of-and-unique-to specific cell types. This acquisition is to continue the maintenance agreement to keep this equipment functioning properly.

The Laboratory of Systems Biology (LSB) currently owns the LSR Fortessa and Facs Flow Supply System. In order to maintain the integrity of on-going research it is imperative that this equipment be maintained in fully operational status. This maintenance agreement will protect the investment of the laboratory in both the equipment and the research in progress.
