LEASE FOR RESEARCH BIOSPECIMEN STORAGE

IHSS, LIR, NIAID

1) BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The major theme of the Laboratory of Immunoregulation (LIR) continues to be the elucidation of cellular and molecular mechanisms of the regulation of the human immune response in health and disease. A major component of this effort is focused on the study of the immunopathogenic mechanisms of HIV disease. The International HIV/STD Section (IHSS) of the LIR is led by Tom Quinn, M.D., a tenured investigator at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland. The functional priorities of the IHSS are to 1) define the unique epidemiologic, clinical, virologic, and immunologic features of HIV infection in developing countries; 2) examine the viral kinetics and other biological and behavioral factors associated with HIV transmission; 3) characterize the molecular strains of HIV by region for infectiousness, transmission, and immunologic response; 4) develop and evaluate novel interventions to prevent HIV transmission, including microbicides, circumcision and vaccines; 5) examine the efficacy of antiretroviral drugs in preventing transmission and increasing survival in developing countries; 6) define the epidemiology, risk factors, and transmission of C. trachomatis genital tract infections in individuals internationally; 7) define the immunopathogenesis of C. trachomatis infection in pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility and blinding trachoma and; 8) implement clinical trials aimed at facilitation of more effective control of blinding trachoma in Africa.

A. Description:

A major component of the IHSS research program is the maintenance of a freezer repository for storage and access to clinical research samples.

B. Scope of this RFP:

The purpose of this SOW is to extend the refrigerated warehousing and storage services at 855 N. Wolfe Street to accommodate freezers belonging to the Laboratory of Immunoregulation, NIAID, NIH.

The NIAID Laboratory of Immunoregulation is renting space from Forest City-New East Baltimore Partnership to house freezers storing precious research samples. The rented space accommodates room for at least 16 freezers/liquid nitrogen storage for Dr. Tom Quinn, Section Chief, International HIV/STD Section, LIR, NIAID. Renting this space at Johns Hopkins facilitates Dr. Quinn’s access to his samples and expedites research in his lab and will collaborators at Johns Hopkins and NIH.
