About this file
This is a technical specification document for the NFES 003411 Aerial Ignition Device, commonly referred to as "ping pong balls," procured by the Department of the Interior Bureau of Land Management Idaho Region under Solicitation Number 140L3726Q0022.
The aerial ignition device is a 32 mm (1.25 inch) diameter sphere constructed from two ultrasonically welded and permanently sealed high-impact polystyrene hemispheres, containing approximately 3.0 grams of potassium permanganate. When injected with common antifreeze (ethylene glycol), the device ignites through chemical reaction within 20 seconds. The spheres are designed for use with the PREMO MKIII Aerial Ignition System and follow a specific operational process: they move from a bulk hopper down a feed chute into a slipper and valve block assembly where they receive ethylene glycol injection before moving to an ejection tube. Packaging specifications require 1,000 spheres per case, with each case labeled with the recommended percentage of ethylene glycol solution needed for the specific sphere type and proper handling markings. Material Safety Data Sheets must be included in each case. Critical hazardous material precautions are mandated: potassium permanganate must be isolated during shipping and storage from arsenic, antimony, glycerol, phosphorus, sulfur, sulfuric acid, hydrogen peroxide, aluminum carbide, titanium, hydrogen trisulfide, and ethylene glycol.

SPECIFICATIONS FOR NFES 003411 AERIAL IGNITION DEVICE
THE AERIAL IGNITION DEVICE (SPHERE), ALSO KNOWN AS “PING PONG BALLS” IS A CONTAINER 32 MM (1.25 INCHES) IN DIAMETER CONTAINING APPROXIMATELY 3.0 GRAMS OF POTASSIIUM PERMANGANATE. IT IS MADE FROM TWO ULTRASONICALLY WELDED AND PERMANENTLY SEALED HEMISHPHERES OF HIGH IMPACT POLYSTYRENE. THE RATE OF CHEMICAL REACTION IS DEPENDENT ON THE PARTICLE SIZE AND CONCENTRATON OF CHEMICALS INVOLVED. WHEN THE SPHERE IS INJECTED WITH COMMON ANTIFREEZE (ETHYLENE GLYCOL) COMBUSTION OCCURS WITHIN 20 SECONDS. ALL SPHERES SHIPPING CASES ARE TO BE LABELED WITH THE RECOMMENDED PERCENTAGE OF ETHYLENE GLYCOL SOLUTIION NEEDED TO OBTAIN THE TIME DELAY FOR THE SPHRE TYPE IN THE CASE. THE SHIPPING CASES WILL ALSO BE CORRECTLY MARKED FOR HANDLING AND MSDS SHEETS WILL BE PLACED IN EACH CASE. THE SPHERE WILL BE USED WITH THE PREMO MKIII AERIAL IGNITION SYSTEM. THE SPHERES WILL BE PACKAGED PER CURRENT REGULATIONS OF 1000 PER CASE. THE SPHERE IS DESIGNED TO MOVE FROM A BULK HOPPER DOWN A FEED CHUTE INTO A SLIPPER AND VALVE BLOCK ASSEMBLY WHERE THEY ARE INJECTED WITH ETHYLENE GLYCOL AND THEN MOVED TO AN EJECTION TUBE.
HAZ MAT CAUTION: POTASSIUM PERMANGANATE (OXIDIZER) MUST BE ISOLATED FROM ARSENIC OR ANTIMONY, GLYCEROL, PHOSPHORUS, SULFUR, SULFURIC ACID, HYDROGEN PEROXIDE, ALUMINUM CARBIDE, TITANIUM, HYDROGEN TRISUPHIDE AND ETHYLENE GLYCOL DURING SHIPPING AND STORAGE.
