Our Community’s History:
The Town of Guilford is on the eastern border of Chenango County, right next to Otsego and Delaware Counties in New York. The land was purchased from the Haudenosaunee in 1785 and first settled in circa 1787. One of the first settlements was in what is now known as East Guilford by the Mercereau brothers who were Revolutionary spies for George Washington. The Town of Guilford includes the hamlets of Mt.Upton, Guilford, Rockdale, East Guilford, Guilford Center and Rockwells Mills. The hamlet of Guilford was settled around 1797. Documents show the Fire Company was established between 1863 and 1864. The Fire District was formed in 1940 to serve surrounding communities and the Emergency Squad in 1956.
The Guilford Fire District encompasses 42.3 square miles, all rural. We are a taxing entity and maintain our Fire Department as required. Our Fire Department averages 300 calls a year. We have approximately 1,500 residents within our Fire District borders.
This does not mean that we do not answer and serve calls from outside our district. In fact, we are a part of the Chenango County Mutual Aid plan, which means we respond to calls throughout the entire county. In addition, we are also a part of the Statewide Fire Mobilization Plan.
As a Fire District, we contract with the Towns of Guilford and the Town of Oxford. We also maintain current mutual aid agreements with 18 additional fire departments in the county.
