About this file
This document is a California State Government request for a Non-Competitively Bid (NCB) contract exemption. The California Science Center is requesting an extension of the previously approved NCB 6333 contract with Gilderfluke & Co. to continue the control system conversion for the Body Works Theater exhibit. The original contract period was May 29, 2015 to July 29, 2015, but due to delays, the new requested contract period is May 29, 2015 to March 1, 2016. The exhibit is a highly complex theatrical presentation involving animatronics, pneumatics, hydraulics, and lighting that requires conversion from an outdated laser disc format to a solid state digital system. The contractor selected must have specific experience with this type of system and familiarity with the original Body Works Theater construction and programming.
The total contract amount is $45,511.35 with no amendment amount. This is a sole source contract, as Gilderfluke & Co. has the necessary specialized expertise. Funding is provided through the California Science Center's agency billing code. No other details regarding pricing terms, set asides, or funding sources are provided.

EXEMPTION JUSTIFICATION (Attach additional sheets if necessary)
Amendment #1. We are requesting an extension of the approved NCB 6333 (attached). Original contract dates were 5/29/15 - 7/29/15, however, during development, review and approval ofNCB, Gilderfluke (uncertain of state approval) accepted another job out of state. Once the Department's NCB was approved, Gilderfluke initiated the digital extraction from laser disk show controller and has been working on updates off-site. Due to push back of schedule, physical installation of the reprogrammed components will not take place until December-Janua,y, with full completion targeted for March 1, 2016. Therefore the new contracted dates will be: 5/29/15 - 3/1/16.
This critical public exhibit is a theatrical presentation involving a highly complex system of animatronics, pneumatic and hydraulic interaction, as well as complicated lighting effects, all operating under a central electronic control system. It is a unique one of a kind exhibit with the principal feature being Tess, a 60' long animatronic female, and was designed and built exclusively for the California Science Center. As the exhibit is 17 years old, its control system now requires a conversion from an outdated laser disc format to solid state digital in order to sustain long term operation moving fo1ward. It is imperative that the Contractor selected to pe1form this operation be both of the following:
1) One who has performed this specific operation to attractions in theme park or interactive museum environments that are similar in size and complexity to the Body Works Theater.
2) One who has direct familiarity with the original construction and programming of the Body Works Theater animatronics.
