NB733060-18-01151 SLM System Upgrade Statement of Work
Page 1 of 2 NB733060-18-01151 SLM System Upgrade - Statment of Work.doc
Background
NIST owns and operates a SLM-IM absolute distance measurement system manufactured by Bridger Photonics, Inc. to support research in structural fire engineering. This system has been successfully used for benchtop-scale experiments to measure the position and movement of objects engulfed in fire. It must now be upgraded so it can be deployed in large-scale experiments in the NIST National Fire Research Laboratory (NFRL). The upgrade is vital to complete FY18 milestones for an active Scientific and Technical Research and Services (STRS)-funded project, as well as for future use in NIST fire research.
Objectives
The objective of this work is to modify NIST’s existing SLM-IM system in order to:
(1) Increase the data sampling rate (update rate) to at least 2 kHz.
(2) Extend the standoff range to at least 5 m.
These modifications are necessary in order to use the SLM-IM to measure the position and movement of objects in large-scale fire tests with the required resolution.
Scope
NIST will send the SLM-IM system to the Contractor so that they can upgrade the hardware and software and perform acceptance testing of the system. The Contractor shall send the upgraded SLM-IM system back to NIST by the end of the period of performance.
Tasks
Task 1 - Increase the data sampling rate
The standard upgrade to the data sampling rate for the SLM-IM system is to 2 kHz. NIST desires to increase the data sampling rate to 4 kHz, if possible. The Contactor believes this is technically feasible, but has not done it previously. In Task 1, the Contractor shall increase the data sampling rate as much as feasible within the period of performance, to a minimum of 2 kHz.
Task 2 - Extend the standoff range
The Contractor shall extend the standoff range of the SLM-IM system to at least 5 m, but not to exceed 10
m. A 5 m range meets the minimum NIST requirements. There are trade-offs between range, signal-to-noise ratio and distance resolution. The Contractor shall consult with NIST via phone if decisions are required to optimize these trade-offs.
Task 3 - Perform acceptance testing
The Contractor shall perform acceptance testing to verify performance including:
System functionally (User Interface, Communications interfaces)
Standoff range: ≥ 5 m
Update rate: ≥ 2 kHz
Distance resolution: FWHM < 1.5 mm
Distance accuracy: better than 1:10^5
Output optical power: 10 mW to 20 mW
