Specifications for a Magnetic Declinometer/Inclinometer System
A magnetic Declinometer/Inclinometer System (D/I System) is a specialized measurement tool allowing for accurate measurements the declination and inclination (the direction) and magnitude of the earth’s magnetic field.
This instrument is needed as part of a calibration system for sensitive and accurate magnetometers made by our group at NIST. It is necessary to perform some calibrations at remote sites away from magnetic contamination due to buildings, electrical systems, automobiles, etc. It become necessary to accurately measure the magnetic field magnitude and direction at the test site to compensate for any bias.
A D/I system consists of a single-axis magnetometer mounted on a steel-free theodolite and steel-free tripod. The theodolite is a surveying instrument that provides measurements of the declination and inclination of the magnetic field. The steel-free (non-magnetic) components are crucial otherwise the magnetic field due to the surveying instruments will corrupt the measurements.
