SPECIFICATIONS
Optical Tables and Leg Supports
BACKGROUND:
The Optical Frequency Measurement Group is part of the Time and Frequency Division at National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). This group develops optical frequency comb sources for time and frequency metrology, and high spectral purity optical, millimeter-wave, microwave, and radio frequency signal generation.
PURPOSE:
NIST requires optical table systems with large vibration isolation and small mechanical compliance for the mounting of optical components with high vibration and alignment sensitivity.
DELIVERABLES:
Two optical table systems comprised of optical table tops with vibration damping and active-air leg supports, and one set of active-air leg supports for an existing NIST optical table top.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS:
Table system #1, consisting of one table top and support legs with active-air isolation
• Table top dimensions (length x width x thickness): 10 ft x 5 ft x 18 inches
• Working surface: ferromagnetic stainless steel
• Table top hole pattern: ¼-20 tapped holes on 1-inch grid, sealed
• Table top surface flatness: may be specified as ± 0.005" over tapped hole region, or ± 0.004 in.
(0.1 mm) over 2 ft. (600 mm) square
• Table top compliance lowest frequency resonance: ≥ 100 Hz
• Table top maximum corner compliance for frequencies > 100 Hz: less than 5x10^-6 in/lb
• Support legs: active-air free-standing leg posts. Leg posts must be compatible with tie-bars for possible tie-bar addition at a later date.
• Support leg height: 18 inches
• Weight capacity per support leg: at least 2000 lbs at maximum rated psi
• Support leg vertical and horizontal natural resonance frequencies: ≤ 2 Hz
• Support leg vertical and horizontal isolation efficiency at 10 Hz: > 90%
Table system #2, consisting of one table top and support legs with active-air isolation
• Table top dimensions (length x width x thickness): 8 ft x 5 ft x 18 inches
• Working surface: ferromagnetic stainless steel
• Table top hole pattern: ¼-20 tapped holes on 1-inch grid
• Table top surface flatness: may be specified as ± 0.005" over tapped hole region, or ± 0.004 in.
(0.1 mm) over 2 ft. (600 mm) square
• Table top compliance lowest frequency resonance: ≥ 100 Hz
• Table top maximum corner compliance for frequencies > 100 Hz: less than 5x10^-6 in/lb.
• Support legs: active-air free-standing leg posts. Leg posts must be compatible with tie-bars for possible tie-bar addition at a later date.
• Support leg height: 18 inches
• Weight capacity per support leg: at least 2000 lbs at maximum rated psi
Optical table leg supports for a 6 ft x 4 ft x 12 inch-thick optical table
• Active-air free-standing leg posts. Leg posts must be compatible with tie-bars for possible tie-bar addition at a later date.
• Support leg height: 24 inches
• Weight capacity per support leg: at least 1000 lbs at maximum rated psi
TECHNICAL CONSIDERATIONS:
Tables must meet required specifications
GOVERNMENT FURNISHED PROPERTY OR INFORMATION: The set of active-air leg supports for an existing NIST optical table top must be compatible with a 6 ft x 4 ft x 12 inch-thick optical table, as described above. NIST will arrange installation of optical tables and leg supports.
