About this file

This is a Requirements/Specification Document for an Optical Frequency Comb system issued by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Physical Measurements Lab, Time and Frequency Division (Contract Number NB688000-26-02289). The document specifies procurement of one optical frequency comb system designed to transfer stability between various laser wavelengths and support high-stability optical cavity work, optical frequency ratio measurements, and future optical timescale development. The primary wavelengths required are 1070 nm, 1156 nm, and 1542 nm, with extensions possible at 729 nm and 1348 nm, covering a range of 500 nm to 2100 nm.

The optical frequency comb system must deliver six comb output channels, up to eight optical input channels (600-2000 nm wavelength range) for beatnote generation, and up to eight RF output channels capable of producing beatnotes with 50 dB signal-to-noise ratio in 100 kHz resolution bandwidth. Critical performance specifications include frequency stability below 5×10⁻¹⁸ at 1 second relative noise, accuracy achieving frequency ratio measurements with offsets below 10⁻¹⁹ at averaging times beyond 10,000 seconds, integrated phase noise below 65 milliradians across 2 MHz bandwidth, and high bandwidth control (>1 MHz) of repetition rate and carrier-envelope offset. The system must be rack-mountable (3U height) with ethernet monitoring and control. Delivery of goods, installation, and training must be completed within 36 weeks of award. Government acceptance testing is expected to take 14 business days. NIST will furnish stable laser sources, a 19-inch electronics rack, and optical table space. The base manufacturer warranty is acceptable, and minimal user training is required beyond the user manual, with any necessary training performed during vendor installation.

TITLE: Optical Frequency Comb Requesting Lab/Division/Group: Physical Measurements Lab / Time and Frequency Division / Ion Storage Group

NB688000-26-02289

General Statement of Need The Time and Frequency division, as part of the Chronos initiative, requires an optical frequency comb to transfer stability between various laser wavelengths and support work on high-stability optical cavities, optical frequency ratio measurements and to develop future optical timescales.

A high stability optical frequency comb with output spectrum covering wavelengths 1070 nm, 1156 nm, 1542 nm with extensions possible at 729 nm and 1348 nm. Required accessories include all the electronic and optical systems to fully stabilize the comb to both RF and optical reference signals and to generate optical beatnotes at the wavelengths specified above which can be used to transfer stability to those laser systems.
