About this file

This Requirements/Specifications document is for a NIST federal contract opportunity (NB688000-25-02425) seeking software development for the ARTIQ experimental control system used in quantum computing research. The primary requirement is for software, firmware, and gateware to enable two key technical capabilities: 1) RTIO (Real-Time Input/Output) event batching for Zynq-based core devices, which will increase event throughput by collecting and transmitting RTIO events in batches, and 2) integrating the ndscan package into ARTIQ without requiring source code patching. The contract specifies that the developed functionality must be integrated into the main ARTIQ GitHub repository and included in the next ARTIQ release, with usability through standard installation channels. The contract is for a single item with a delivery timeline of 12 months from award, and includes planned government acceptance testing over 7 business days.

TITLE: ARTIQ Zynq Batching and NDSCAN Requesting Lab/Division/Group: Physical Measurements Lab/Time and Frequency Division/Ion Storage Group

NB688000-25-02425

General Statement of Need The Ion Storage Group at NIST performs a variety of quantum computing, quantum simulation, and optical clock experiments using trapped ions. These experiments are very complex and require advanced real-time classical control. The ARTIQ experimental control system, initially developed for the Ion Storage Group, is used to operate our experiments. For the next generation of quantum information and clock experiments, we require the ability to increase the throughput of RTIO events from Zynq-based core devices in ARTIQ through batching. We also require modifications to ARTIQ to enable the use of the ndscan ARTIQ extension package without patching of ARTIQ. Detailed specifications for Ion Storage Group ARTIQ Zynq event batching and ndscan compatibility requisition. Terminology is as defined in the linked GitHub repositories listed below and their associated code and documentation.

Items and/or Ancillary Services

Item 1: Software, firmware, and gateware to enable RTIO event batching on Zynq-based core devices and the use of ndscan with unpatched ARTIQ.

Quantity: 1 Specifications:

1. Must implement the capability of RTIO event batching for all Zynq-based core devices for ARTIQ (Kasli SoC and ZC706). The event batching means collecting a buffer of RTIO events from the kernel and transmitting them as a batch from the hard processor to the RTIO engine in the FPGA fabric.

2. The batching must result in an increased average sustained RTIO event throughput rate from the hard processor to the RTIO engine in the FPGA fabric relative to that achievable in ARTIQ 8.0.

3. Must develop a new context manager (such as “with batch”) to be added to ARTIQ-Python for the user to enable RTIO event batching as described above in relevant kernel sections.

4. All RTIO events within a “with batch” context will be transmitted from hard processor to the RTIO engine in the FPGA fabric as a batch, upon closing of the “with batch” context, or through an explicit method that calls for the transmission of all the currently enqueued batched events without leaving the “with batch” context.

5. All of the above functionalities must be integrated into the main ARTIQ repository at https://github.com/m-labs/artiq, must be included in the next ARTIQ release after their satisfactory completion and testing, and must be usable for ARTIQ installations made through any standard ARTIQ installation channel (not requiring ARTIQ to be built from source).

SPECIFICATIONS FOR DNSCAN INTEGRATION:

1. Must implement all necessary modifications to ARTIQ to enable the use of the ndscan package at https://github.com/OxfordIonTrapGroup/ndscan without patching ARTIQ.

2. Implementation must work for NAC-3 ARTIQ compiler.

3. All of the above functionalities must be integrated into the main ARTIQ repository at https://github.com/m-labs/artiq, must be included in the next ARTIQ release after their satisfactory

Requirements / Specifications: ARTIQ Zynq Batching and NDSCAN 2 completion and testing, and must be usable for ARTIQ installations made through any standard ARTIQ installation channel (not requiring ARTIQ to be built from source).
