STATEMENT OF WORK
NONLINEAR CRYSTALS FOR SUM FREQUENCY GENERATION
The NIST Ion Storage group performs quantum-information operations on the electronic states of trapped ions using high-power ultraviolet (UV) laser light. This light is generated using the nonlinear process of sum frequency generation to convert infrared laser light to visible, which is then converted to UV. The sum frequency generation takes place in a specialized nonlinear-optical material. Through years of laboratory testing and experience, we have identified Covesion’s periodically-poled lithium niobite (PPLN) crystals as the only practical option for the nonlinear-optical crystals that can convert infrared light to the visible light that we need and with sufficient efficiency. Because very high power infrared laser light is sent to these crystals, they are susceptible to eventual damage during routine alignment and use. This request is to purchase nonlinear-optical crystals to replace those that have been damaged.
