About this file
This document is a Requirements and Specifications form from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) detailing requirements for a 9.4T 5mm NMR RF probe suite. The Magnetic Imaging Group at NIST's Physical Measurement Laboratory seeks to acquire three NMR RF probes to enhance their measurement capabilities for the magnetic resonance community.
The key technical specifications require the probes to mate with a gradient/shim insert at 408mm depth, fit in a 41mm bore diameter, and be constructed with plastic/ceramic components to minimize eddy currents. The probes must be designed as 1H/X/Lock solution state NMR probes with 1H center frequency corresponding to 9.4 Tesla (400 MHz nominal), accept standard 5mm NMR sample tubes, have inner coil for X nuclei and outer coil for 1H, achieve 2.2 Hz 1H linewidth, maintain low 13C background signals, and provide variable temperature capabilities from -80 to +120 Celsius. The acquisition includes electronic manuals and requires government acceptance testing within 7 business days. No installation, training, maintenance, or special shipping requirements are specified.

TITLE: 9.4 T 5mm NMR Probe Requesting Lab/Division/Group: Physical Measurement Laboratory, 686.08
NB686080-25-00614
General Statement of Need The Magnetic Imaging Group is requesting a 9.4T NMR RF probes to enhance its capabilities to provide measurements to the magnetic resonance community. This probe would provide new capability at a higher than previously offered magnetic field strength and include multinuclear capabilities. This NMR RF probe would integrate with external gradient coils to provide larger fields and better gradient linearity for certain measurements. At present existing NMR RF probes in the Magnetic Imaging Group cannot use this field strength without an RF probe and therefore limits the available measurements offered to customers.
BACKGROUND: Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and imaging require precise control of the radiofrequency (RF) pulses as well as their gradient waveforms to accurate measure biomarkers such as T1, T2, diffusion of materials. Developments at NIST require NMR RF probes capable of experiments that range from 0.065 T to 9.4T in magnetic field strength, multinuclear decoupling and detection, and augementation of gradient waveforms to better serve the needs of our customers. To this end, the Magnetic Imaging Group would like to acquire a new NMR RF probe capable of providing these measurements at 9.4T. This project would provide new magnetic field measurements. These additions would bring improved measurement capabilities to the Magnetic Imaging Group and provide provide flexibility for future work .
OBJECTIVE(S): This project is designed to add one new NMR RF probes at 9.4 T to the existing set of NMR probes owned by the Magnetic Imaging Group. This probe will allow for additional flexibility unavailable in the existing probes such as non-proton isotopes and compatibility with external gradient systems. These new capabilities will enchance the work of our group to the NIST mission of providing quantitative and precise measurements for medical imaging.
SCOPE/GENERAL REQUIREMENTS: In acquiring a new NMR RF probe, the Magnetic Imaging Group will enhance the capabilities of services provided to the magnetic resonance community.
This probes will improve the available frequency range of measurements, reduce uncertainty in diffusion measurements, and allow for additional isotopes.
