About this file

This is a Requirements/Specification Document for the procurement of a picosecond laser system by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Communications Technology Laboratory, Quantum Communications Division. The requesting organization is the Quantum Networks Architecture and Protocols Group (676.02) located at NIST-Gaithersburg, Maryland (Mail Stop 676.02, 100 Bureau Dr, Gaithersburg MD 20899). The laser is critical for generating entangled photon pairs and enabling entanglement swapping between quantum network nodes, serving as a pump for nonlinear crystals to facilitate spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC).

The procurement specifies one picosecond laser with the following technical requirements: wavelength of 775 ± 0.25 nm, integrated laser controllers with external clock synchronization capability, pulse width less than 50 picoseconds, spectral width less than 15 picometers, pulse-to-pulse jitter less than 10% RMS, clock-to-laser pulse jitter less than 3 picoseconds, single-mode fiber-coupled output with optical power exceeding 200 mW at the fiber output, 80 MHz repetition rate, and design for reliable 24/7 continuous operation. The vendor must possess an Export Control Classification Number (ECCN) and an active Unique Entity Identification Number (UEI) on SAM.gov at the time of award. Delivery must be direct to the NIST-Gaithersburg facility. Installation shall be turnkey, with acceptance expected to exceed 7 business days as the TPOC will set up and test the system. A one-year base manufacturer warranty is acceptable, including parts, labor, and cost/liability for returns. Power availability at the site includes 120V, 10A maximum, single-phase, 60 Hz standard NEMA L5-20P connection in a common lab/office environment.

Requirements / Specification Document

TITLE: Picosecond Laser

Requesting Laboratory / Division / Group:

Communications Technology Laboratory Quantum Communications Division Quantum Networks Architecture and Protocols Group (676.02)

General Statement of Need:

This acquisition aims to procure a picosecond pulsed laser that can be synchronized with quantum network clocks. Such a laser is critical for generating entangled photon pairs and enabling entanglement swapping between network nodes. This compact laser will serve as the pump for a nonlinear crystal, facilitating spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) to generate entangled photons. The laser must possess key features, including external clock synchronization, single-mode operation, and near transform-limited pulse widths to ensure the generation of high-quality indistinguishable single photons. As the network scales, additional sources must remain compact and modular, making the laser’s form factor small and ease of operation (e.g., turnkey solution) essential.
