About this file

This document is a Detail Specification for the Survival, Aircrewmen's Vest (AIRSAVE), a modular vest system designed for military aircrew. The specification covers two vest types: Type I (CMU-33A/P22P-18(V)) with a hoisting harness for helicopter and non-ejection fixed-wing aircraft, and Type II (CMU-36/P) without a hoisting harness for tactical air operations. The vest is available in Coyote Brown 3758 and is designed to integrate with soft and hard body armor.

The specification provides comprehensive technical requirements including materials (raschel knit nylon mesh, duck cloth), construction details, performance standards, and inspection criteria. Key components include modular pockets (knife, radio, general, oxygen regulator, pistol/ammo), attachments for flashlight and life preservers, and optional expansion panels. The document specifies precise manufacturing standards, dimensional tolerances, flame resistance, color matching, and quality control processes. The vest is intended to provide a flexible, adaptable protection system for military aircrew with multiple configuration options to suit different operational needs.

3.4.3 Stitches, seams, and stitching. All the seams used in the fabrication of the vests shall conform to the applicable drawings; stitch, seam and stitching types specified throughout the vest’s technical data package shall conform to ASTM D-6193. Except for the over edge stitching, the stitching in the vest shall be accomplished with Stitch Type 301. Each row of stitching shall be straight and parallel to the seam edge. The straightness of the stitching, in any row, shall be maintained within a tolerance of plus or minus 1/32 inch. The over edge stitching shall be accomplished with Stitch

Type 502, 503, 504, or 505. On the inside of the general and radio pockets, all raw edges shall be over edge stitched. The thread and stitching used in fabrication shall conform to applicable drawing requirements.

3.4.3.1 Stitches, bar tack. The location and length of the bar tacks shall conform to applicable drawing requirements. Unless otherwise specified, each bar tacks shall have 42 needle penetrating stitches per inch minimum, totally covering the width of the 1 inch webbing from edge to edge. The width of the bar tack shall be 1/8 (± 1/16) inch wide. Wherever backstitching is required throughout the drawings, a bar tack may be substituted. Bar tacking shall be free from thread breaks and loose stitching.

3.4.3.1.1 Loop bar tack, general pocket. A 1/8 inch wide by 7/8 inch long, 42 to 48 needle penetrating stitches per bar tack may be used in lieu of the two rows of straight stitching on the inside anchor loop (3.3.1.2) on the general pocket. The anchor loop security shall not be compromised. The bar tack stitching shall be visible in the binding tape just as the straight stitching.

The ends of the anchor loop shall be seared prior to sewing the bar tack.

3.4.3.2 Thread breaks and ends of seams. All the thread ends shall be trimmed to ¼ inch or less. No raw edges are permitted on exterior of vest. The cut edges of the binding tape shall be turned under. The thread tension shall be maintained so that there shall be no loose or tight stitching.

When making the above repairs, the ends of the stitching are not required to be backstitched.

a. When thread breaks, skipped stitches, run-offs, or bobbin run-outs occur during stitching, the stitching shall be repaired by restarting the stitching a minimum of 1 inch back of the end of the stitching.

b. Thread breaks or two or more consecutive skipped or run-off stitches noted during inspection of the item shall be repaired by overstitching. The stitching shall start a minimum of 1 inch in back of the defective area; continue over the defective area onto the existing stitching.

Loose or excessively tight stitching shall be repaired by removing the defective stitching without damaging the materials, and restitching in the required manner.

3.4.3.3 Cut edges. The cut edges of the nylon webbings, and cords, except for the hook and loop fastener tapes, shall be seared, prior to the fabrication of the vests and pockets, to prevent fraying.

Where applicable on the vest and/or pockets, the binding tape shall be seared, folded under once, and secured with a bar tack or secured with two rows of stitches. No sharp edges shall be formed.

The cut edges of the cloth duck, textured nylon, shall be over edged stitched (serged) except those that are completely covered by aramid binding tape, hook and loop fastener tapes, or are completely encased by the seam construction. The exposed stiffener edge in the radio pockets shall be over edged stitched. For the oxygen regulator pocket (TACAIR or V-22), the finished ¾ inch diameter hole shall be seared after the stiffener is sewn to the basic material of the pocket. Unless otherwise specified, all snaps placed on webbing straps shall be centered on the webbing and ½ inch up from the seared edge of webbing.

3.4.4 Color.

3.4.4.1 Coyote brown 3758 (class 2). Unless otherwise specified within the AIRSAVE vest's technical data package, the color of the vest and/ or optional items shall be Class 1, Camouflage

Green 483 or Class 2, Coyote Brown 3758. The color of the raschel knit cloth specified in

3.3.1.1.1 and plain weave cloth specified in 3.3.1.1.2 shall match their standard. The color of the remaining components shall approximate the plain weave cloth standard specified in 3.3.1.1.2

3.4.5 Dimensions, tolerance. Unless otherwise specified, the tolerances for all drawings and the patterns shall be as specified in Table XIV.

TABLE XIV. Tolerance dimensions.

Dimension Tolerance Under 1/16 inch ± 1/32 inch More than 1/16 inch but less than 2 inches ± 1/16 inch 2 inches or more but less than 10 inches ± 1/8 inch 10 inches or more but less than 30 inches ± 1/4 inch 30 inches or more but less than 60 inches ± 3/8 inch 60 inches or more ± 1 Inch

3.5 Performance requirements.

3.5.1 Performance requirement for webbing system. All bar tacks on the vest, expansion panel and modular pockets shall be in vertical alignment ± 1/16 inch with the exception of the bar tacks located at the front neckline and armholes. All loops shall be utilized. Unless otherwise specified within the technical data package, the loops shall be 1-½ inch apart when measured from center line of bar tack to center line of bar tack on the vest and backs of pocket and the distance between the webbing strips shall be 1 inch. The webbing system on left and right front and back panels shall be in horizontal alignment. The finished dimensional requirements for the webbing system shall be specified in the appropriate assembly drawings.

3.5.2 Performance requirement for pockets. All dimensions on sides, back and front of pockets shall be uniform in width. The pockets shall be free from distortion i.e. no puckers, no fold overs.

For all pockets with rectangular bottoms, the edges shall be at right angles to each other and the bottom shall not be flared. When seam type SSe-2 (a) and (b) of ASTM D6193 is formed on the sides of a pocket, the edges of the folded seam shall be properly formed prior to sewing the second row of stitching to the pocket. The finished dimensional requirements for the pockets shall be specified in the appropriate assembly drawings. In the event there is a discrepancy between the finished dimensions on the assembly drawings and the pocket pattern, the drawing shall take precedence over the pattern.

3.5.3 Performance requirement for hoisting harness. When hoisting harness is fully assembled, the chest strap shall lay flat when inserted through the chest strap channels.

3.6 Workmanship. Completed vests or optional items shall be free of all loose thread, lint, foreign matter, irregularities or defects that could adversely affect performance or durability and uniform in quality and the defects cited under Table XVIII.

4. VERIFICATION

4.1 Classification of inspections. The inspection requirements specified herein are classified as follows:

a. First article inspection (see 4.2).

b. Conformance inspection (see 4.3).

4.2 First article inspection. A first article inspection shall be performed on the completed vest or optional items. The first article inspection shall be unacceptable if the requirements in Table XV are not met.
