About this file

This document is Section X of NAVAIR 51-5-31 Part B, which provides overhaul instructions for the retrieve engine and torque converter used in the E-28 Emergency Runway Arresting Gear system.

The retrieve engine overhaul procedures detail the systematic disassembly, inspection, cleaning, and reassembly of engine components including the flywheel, air shrouding, carburetor, manifolds, cylinder head, gear cover, gear train, idler gear and shaft, oil pan, oil pump, pistons and connecting rods, cylinders, valves, crankshaft, and camshaft. Key torque specifications are provided in Table 10-1 for critical fasteners including spark plugs (25-30 lb. ft.), manifold nuts (40-50 lb. ft.), cylinder head screws (25-32 lb. ft.), connecting rod nuts (28-32 lb. ft.), and cylinder block mounting nuts (62-78 lb. ft.). The procedures include detailed instructions for component removal, cleaning with solvent and lint-free cloth, replacement of O-rings and gaskets, lubrication requirements, and reassembly sequences with specific clearance tolerances and alignment specifications. The torque converter overhaul section addresses the oil cooler, sump plate, converter drive element, converter elements including turbine and stator assemblies, output shaft, charging oil pump, converter bypass valve, and input disconnect clutch assembly. Table 10-2 provides torque specifications for converter components ranging from 15-18 lb. ft. for oil cooler cover bolts to 83-100 lb. ft. for output shaft bolts. Additional tables include inspection procedures (Table 10-4), general bolt and screw torque specifications (Table 10-3), spring wear limits data (Table 10-5), and a torque converter disassembly table and stand specification (Figures 10-31 and 10-32). All procedures emphasize proper tool usage, component protection during disassembly, detailed marking and identification of matched parts, and adherence to specified clearances and torque values to ensure safe and efficient operational status upon completion.
