About this file

This document describes a federal contract opportunity for the application of carbon nanotube technology to advanced solid rocket motor cases. The Naval Air Systems Command, Weapons Division is seeking proposals to apply innovative carbon nanotube technologies to composite solid rocket motor cases for tactical missiles to meet structural, aerothermal and electromagnetic environmental effect requirements. Proposals should demonstrate the ability to select carbon nanotube technologies through laboratory and subscale testing to meet handling, E3, aerothermal and environmental requirements as outlined in technical guidelines. Interested parties should submit capability statements not exceeding five pages addressing prior experience, ability to meet requirements, and responding to attached questions, with a deadline of [DATE REDACTED]. The opportunity is designated as a pre-solicitation with potential for small business set aside under NAICS code 336414.

Application of Carbon Nanotube Technology to Advanced Solid Rocket Motor Case Capability Statement Questions

Minimum Capability Requirements for Demonstration:

Phase 1:

(1) Demonstrate viability of selected Carbon Nanotube (CNT) technology/technologies to meet handling, E^3, aerothermal and environmental requirements outlined in a NAWCWD-provided Technical Guideline Document to be provided at the time of contract award via laboratory and subscale testing.

(2) Demonstrate ability to apply selected CNT technology/technologies to composite case structure in subscale test units.

(3) Demonstrate ability of selected CNT technology/technologies to meet requirements outlined in a NAWCWD-provided Technical Guidelines via application to a relevant composite case or composite case simulant. The Composite case or case simulant can be either vendor or Government fabricated.

Phase 2:

(1) Demonstration of ability to scale selected CNT technology/technologies to commercially viable scales via market surveys to define commercial scales and studies to define critical processes and procedures needed for scaling.

(2) Demonstrate viability of scaling critical processes through Pilot scale demonstrations.

Additional Capabilities

(1)Demonstrated knowledge and experience with Department of Defense (DOD) tactical missile applications and environments.
(2)Demonstration of ability to transition CNT to aerospace applications.
(3)Experience with aerospace composite structures and, specifically, composite rocket motor case structures.
