Section C - Descriptions and Specifications

SECTION C:

The Contractor shall modify the existing Virginia Payload Tube Facility Tube Support Structure (VPT TSS) in accordance with Attachment 1, Specification, and Attachment 2, Drawings.

As part of the work to install welded reinforcing steel plates on the existing VPT steel support structure, the existing pipe scaffolding system may require partial removal and/or modifications to permit access to perform the welds.

The existing pipe scaffold system is an engineered and certified system that suits the present VPT test and evaluation operations. In the event that the contractor modifies the existing pipe scaffold system in any way, the contractor shall re-certify the scaffold system upon re-assembly of the scaffolding at project completion and turnover of the steel plate reinforcement work in accordance with Attachments 3 and 4. The contractor shall provide as-built scaffold documents sealed and signed by a registered professional engineer along with a certification letter for the scaffold system.

Note that if the existing pipe scaffolding is not modified in any way, there is no requirement for recertifying the scaffold system. However, for the purposes of this project, the removal and replacement of guard rails and platform planks, and/or other such scaffold elements constitutes a modification to the scaffold system that will require a re-certification of the system.
