v1.0_APRIL2016
BRAND NAME SPECIFICATION
SubLAN External Hard Drive Equipment
1300695176
BACKGROUND:
The Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Newport (NUWCDIVNPT) Submarine network engineering team is responsible for the design of the Submarine Local Area Network (SubLAN) /Consolidated Afloat Networks and Enterprise Services (CANES) hardware and software suites deployed on all submarine platforms in the United States Navy fleet. The CANES, AN/USQ- 208(V) family of systems is an onboard, submarine-wide network infrastructure that provides end-to-end connectivity throughout the submarine and enables submarine subsystems to interact with off-board activities via the Exterior Communication Subsystem (ECS). CANES implements a SECRET and a separate Unclassified LAN. The Unclassified LAN is used primarily for Non-secure Internet Protocol Router Network (NIPRNET) access to support administrative functions and quality-of-life related elements. The Secret LAN provides Secure Internet Protocol Router Network (SIPRNET) and supports a variety of Secret-level and below tasks.

BRAND NAME SPECIFICATION:
The SubLAN/CANES project is purchasing this equipment as part of tasking to complete software (SW) builds in the Submarine Networks Development & Test Facility at the NUWCDIVNPT in order to transition to a new version of the operating system that runs on the servers in shipboard installations. This operating system is the Common PC Operating System Environment (COMPOSE), version 4.0.1. COMPOSE is a customized version of Microsoft Windows Server. COMPOSE is distributed and supported by NUWCDIVNPT’s Program Management Office, SPAWAR PMW-160, Naval Networks Command. COMPOSE is a standard operating system used throughout PEO C4I Afloat Networks.
In the NUWCDIVNPT facility, the software is built for shipboard use using submarine network equipment that replicates shipboard network hardware configurations. Each submarine network system build includes server, storage element, switch, and workstation loads compatible with the specific submarine platform. The finished build package consists of the consolidated software image, resident on a system hard drive, and a completed build verification document. The SW v1.0_APRIL2016 built in the lab is installed on board submarines via shipyard hardware alteration packages (SHIPALTS) and engineering change packages (EC) packages.
The brand name of external hard drives (HDDs) specified for this procurement is currently in use onboard submarines delivered by Electronic Engineering Change Order (ECO) 34; Technical Manual Identification Number (TMIN) EE689-BM-ECO-034; National Stock Number (NSN) 0913-LP-114-3988. In order to deliver the SW on the same media that will be used on the ship, the Western Digital (WD) My Passport Ultra 4 Terabyte (TB) Portable HDD (WDBYFT0040BBK -WESN) USB 3.0 is required.
In order for Code 25 to maintain SubLAN continuity of operations, in support of SPAWAR PMW-160’s mission, these brand name specified HDDs are required. Failure to procure the brand name specified HDDs would severely impact SubLAN’s ability to deliver usable versions of SubLAN software and would impact deployment of the software to the fleet. As required, these HDDs are the same as those that are used onboard ships and are compatible with the custom version of COMPOSE.
