1.0 BACKGROUND

The Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division, Newport (NUWCDIVNPT) currently has the requirement to provide training in Solid Modeling Computer Aided Design (CAD), specifically in SolidWorks: a software NUWCDIVNPT maintains license agreements with. SolidWorks Solid Modeling CAD software is used for the mechanical engineering design and development of undersea systems in support of the NUWC Division Newport mission. The purpose of the training is to provide new users at NUWCDIVNPT the standard methods of Solid Modeling CAD and to maintain the skill sets of current SolidWorks users at NUWCDIVNPT.

2.0 SCOPE

SolidWorks Solid Modeling CAD software is the standard software application for Solid Modeling CAD that NUWCDIVNPT maintains licensing agreements for. The Contractor shall provide the following five individual courses; Core Essentials, Advanced Assembly, Parts Modeling, Drawing, and Surfacing. The vendor shall provide an offsite location on Aquidneck Island (Portsmouth, Middletown, or Newport) equipped to facilitate the training and provide the necessary computer equipment and software to teach the SolidWorks courses. The contractor shall be a certified reseller of SolidWorks.

3.0 REQUIREMENTS

3.1 Core Essentials

This course of instruction should train designers and engineers in the use of SolidWorks as their primary Computer Aided Design tool. No prerequisite required.

• 3D-feature based parametric solid modeling for part design;

• Assembly creation;

• Drawing generation.

3.3 Advanced Assembly

Advanced Assembly is a how-to on the best practices for large assembly management.

Comprehension of SolidWorks Essentials required.

• In-context assembly design;

• Layout-based assemblies;

• Advanced mechanical linkages;

• Large assembly management

3.4 Surfacing

To learn the skills for surface-based approaches to product design for ergonomic, aesthetic, and/or aerodynamic shapes. Completion or comprehension SolidWorks Essentials and Advanced Assembly required.

• Basic and advanced surfacing functions;

• Hybrid surface/solid modeling;

• Surface modeling techniques

• Working with imported solids and surfaces.

3.5 Parts Modeling

This course is meant for customers who have challenging part geometry. SolidWorks Essentials required.

• Advanced shapes;

• Mold and die design;

• Methods for more flexible product design approach;

• Surfacing and splines.

3.6 Drawing

Drawing is a how-to on the best practices for making drawings of SolidWorks parts and assemblies. SolidWorks essentials required.

• Creation of special drawing view types;

• Best practices for drawing management;

• Customization of title blocks;
