Brand Name Justification Nutanix Virtual Storage and Processing Node
BACKGROUND:
The Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Division Newport, Code 15 SONAR Analysis Facility (SAF) executes physics based models to perform evaluations of current and future SONAR systems, supports Analysis of Alternatives (AoA) studies, and performs other evaluations to support decision making for the Navy community. To accomplish this effort and keep up with industry which is trending toward centralized virtual computing environments due to the greatly enhanced centralized management capabilities they offer, NUWC has established virtual environments using Nutanix equipment which exist in .
Efforts are underway to upgrade these environments to satisfy the ever increasing needs of our community of users. Other brands are not compatible with the Nuatnix gear we currently have.
Market research has shown there are several small businesses that can provide this requirement and therefore, this requirement does not require sole sourcing.
Code 15 used CIP funding to purchase a larger Nutanix Virtualization system in September 2014 under connect N66604‐14‐F‐1562. This contract was also brand name specific to allow for integration with systems supporting developmental efforts.
These connected systems have proved to help with algorithm and software development efforts and this system has be available for all projects associated with .
Since the assets are compatible, the hardware and virtualization software has allowed the assets to share processing and storage, as well as provide a simpler upgrade path for future hardware purchases. It is for this reason; the current requirement for a single additional node is being requested as brand name specific.

BRAND NAME JUSTIFICATION:
As mentioned above, the current virtual environments have been established using Nutanix brand equipment. The current system consists of . Going to another brand would mean starting from scratch and would take approximately 9‐12 months to consult with vendors and design and test a new solution. Based on the Nutanix system purchased under contract N66604‐14‐F‐1562, it is estimated a new solution would cost approximately $750,500 for the full NUWC infrastructure rebuild. Other factors include; data migration, network switch reconfigurations, power demands, user downtime, impacts to project deliverable timelines, and redesign of current data backup integration plans. Since this requirement is for a single additional node, it would not be practical to consider a complete rebuild at this time.
The interconnectivity is a benefit to the Government and allows for the purchase of minimal assets, therefore saving the Government time and money. The benefit has shown that interdepartmental concept development is cost effective and efficient. Replacing the entire system with something new would be prohibitive in terms of schedule and cost. It would negatively affect Code 15s mission as well as NUWC’s mission of inter‐departmental efforts.
Therefore, it is in the best interest of the Government to solicit this requirement on a brand name specific basis.
