An Equivalent 3D Metal Printer must meet the following requirements to be considered for award:
· Must 3d print metal materials using a method different than inkjet binder printing, selective laser sintering, or other powder bed methods.
· Must print materials using feedstock similar to that used in metal injection molding processes, with the binder and metal powder in a coherent feedstock and not as a loose unmixed powder.
· Must have demonstrated capability to then remove the polymer binder and sinter the parts to achieve high densities and strength. This process can involve either a binder wash or multiple heating steps in a furnace to remove binder and then sinter the green part.
· Must have a maximum part size of 10 inches by 6 inches by 6 inches or better.
· Must have the capability, either at delivery or within 1 calendar year, or printing aluminum and magnesium with consumables that will eventually be supplied by the vendor. No new equipment besides these consumables should be necessary.
· Must have the capability of printing stainless steel on delivery.
· Must include equipment for removing binder prior to sintering; this can either be a debinder wash, a heat treatment, or some combination of these.
· Must include a full sintering furnace that is either equipped with its own gas bottles or can accommodate a standard gas cylinder. This sintering furnace must be capable of sintering green parts constructed of stainless steel, aluminum, titanium, and similar metals. Sintering must be possible in an oxygen-free environment suitable for materials such as aluminum.
· Must have software to interface with the printer such that 3d CAD models such as those from SolidWorks can be uploaded and the printing process done automatically.
· Must have 50 micron or better resolution in the build direction.
· Must include delivery to Monterey, CA, installation, and training of faculty and students on usage.
· Must utilize a standard 110 or 240 VAC power source.
