The new bolster will be shaped in accordance with Reference 1. Installation of the new bolster will be similar to the current installation method, except the new bolster will be wrapped around (either) outboard cable sheave for flexibility, as the centerline cable sheave will be removed from the ship. Small padeyes for tagline attachment shall be installed at the outer corners of the bolster to allow for directional control of the bolster during the installation process.

4.0 CONFIGURATION

The new bolster will be shaped in accordance with Reference 1. Each end will be terminated with an end fitting, placed in accordance with Reference 1. The fittings at either end shall be connected through a bore of the bolster by an internal chain, and shall terminate in a swivel fitting which allows the end of the fitting to rotate freely on the axis of the bolster. The interior of the bolster shall be completely filled with an energy absorbing closed-cell foam core as specified. Small padeyes for tagline attachment shall be installed at the outer corners of the bolster.

4.1. Foam Core

The energy absorbing foam core shall be of heat laminated construction using a resilient closed cell, cross-linked polyethylene foam with the following properties. Use of chipped or granulated particulate foam is not acceptable. Use of adhesive to bond the foam together is not acceptable. The tests shown below all form a part of ASTM 0-3575.

Density: 1.6 Ib/ft3 to 2.4 Ib/ft3

Tensile Strength (average direction): 37 psi minimum Elongation (average direction): 95% minimum Compressive Strength (50% deflection): 13.8 psi minimum Compression Set: 22% maximum Tear Resistance: llibs/in minimum Water Absorption: less than 0.2 Ib/ft2 of cut surface

Manufacturer shall supply test reports with bid indicating compliance with density, tensile strength, elongation, compressive strength, and tear resistance foam properties.

4.2. Bolster Skin

The bolster skin shall be constructed of elastomer and filament reinforcing as specified.

Separate filament reinforcing wraps shall be applied as specified in Paragraph 4.2.2. The filament wraps shall be evenly distributed in the inner 75% to 90% of the coating thickness. The outer 10% to 25% of elastomer shall have no filament reinforcement. The elastomer and filaments shall be applied in a continuous manner to assure adhesion between the various layers.

4.2.1. Elastomer

The elastomer in the bolster skin shall be the reaction product solely of toluene diisocyanate, PTMG (polytetramethylene ether glycol), and an aromatic diamine. The elastomer shall meet the following unreinforced properties.

Page 6 of9 ZNA-T-00063, Rev A

TLCfI,W>LtX'iIL',' USNS Zeus Stern Roller Bolster Specification

Shore A Hardness (ASTM 0 2240): 75 to 95 Tensile Strength (ASTM 0412): 2,000 psi minimum Ultimate Elongation (ASTM 0412): 300% minimum Tear Strength (ASTM 0 624): 185 Ib/in minimum Ross Flex life (ASTM 0 1052): 10,000 cycles minimum NBS Abrasion Resistance (ASTM 0 1630): 100 minimum

Manufacturer shall supply test reports with bid indicating compliance with these skin properties.

4.2.2. Filament Wrap

Each filament reinforcing wrap shall be constructed of continuous filaments applied in an overlapping helical pattern, at a helix angle of 45° to 60° to the longitudinal axis of the bolster.

A wrap shall consist of two such filament helixes of equal but opposing helix angles. The spacing between the filaments in the same helix shall be no more than 0.125 inch, measured in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the bolster. Each wrap shall extend along the entire longitudinal axis of the bolster and shall also encircle and encase the bolster end fittings.

4.2.3. Filament Reinforcement

The reinforcing filaments in the outer skin shall be nylon tire cord of 2520 denier weight with the following properties.

Breaking Strength: 521b Ultimate Elongation: 16%

4.2.4. Reinforced Skin Properties

The reinforced skin, when constructed in accordance with this specification, shall exhibit the following properties when tested in accordance with the guidelines below.

Tensile Strength:

Ultimate Elongation:

Tear Strength:

When a full-thickness specimen is tested in tension, with the longitudinal direction of pull aligned with the filament direction (in one direction), the specimen shall have the following breaking strength: 4,500 psi minimum.

In the test for Tensile Strength, the specimen shall have the following elongation at break: 16% minimum.

When a full-thickness specimen is tested in tear, with the specimen shaped like Die C in ASTM 0-624, and with the direction of pull aligned with

Page 7 of9 ZNA-T-00063, Rev A nWNOLlK"", USNS Zeus Stern Roller Bolster Specificotion the filament direction (in one helix direction), the specimen shall have the following tear strength: 450 Ib/in.

The reinforced skin shall be at least 1 inch thick.

4.3. Hardware

The end fittings of the bolster shall be steel and galvanized per ASTM A-123 unless otherwise specified. The end fittings and internal connecting chain shall be designed and sized to transmit the safe working load and accept the shackle size specified. The internal chain and end fittings shall have a safe working load of 55,000 lb. Connecting shackle size shall be 1-3/4 inches and shall have a safe working load limit of 55,000 lb.

4.3.1. Bolster End Fittings

The bolster shall have a fitting at each end of the bolster body located in accordance with Reference 1. The fitting shall include a tubular member located on the longitudinal axis of the bolster and a truncated cone-shaped annular seat integral with the tubular member. The cone shaped annular seat of each fitting shall coordinate with the axially adjacent end of the bolster to extend the shape of the bolster end to the tubular member. The fitting shall also have an attachment element including an annular flange affixed to the end of the tubular member and one or more plates for attaching the end of the bolster to a structure by means of a chain or the like.

The elastomeric bolster skin shall integrally encase the foam core and the tubular member and truncated cone-shaped annular seat of each end fitting. The fibers of the filament reinforcing wrap shall also integrally encircle the foam core and the annular seat of each end fitting.

The end fittings at the ends of the bolster shall connect to the internal chain passing through the bolster and the tubular members so that loads are transferred from the chains to the attachment elements through the internal chain. The connection between the end fittings and the internal chain shall allow for tensioning or adjustment of the tension in the internal chain.

4.3.2. Tagline Padeyes

The bolster shall have two small padeyes for tagline attachment located as shown in Reference

1. The fittings shall include a 6 I x6"xl" plate inserted between the foam core and the bolster skin. A hole shall be punched through the bolster skin, and the plate threaded. A stainless steel washer and swivel hoist ring shall be installed. A marine sealant such as 3M 5200 shall be used· to prevent water ingress around the padeye installation.
