SAFETY SUMMARY
GENERAL SAFETY NOTICES
The following general safety notices supplement specific warnings and cautions appearing elsewhere in this manual. General and specific precautions must be understood and applied during operation and maintenance.
The Commanding Officer or other authority will issue orders as deemed necessary for any situation not covered in the general and specific safety precautions.
KEEP AWAY FROM LIVE CIRCUITS
Operating personnel must observe all safety regulations at all times. Do not replace components, make adjust-ments, or perform internal equipment maintenance without first securing electrical power. Dangerous potential may exist when the electrical power is in the OFF position because of charges retained by capacitors. Before touching, always secure electrical power and discharge the circuit by shorting through a load to ground with a shorting probe.
DO NOT REPAIR OR ADJUST ALONE
Under no circumstances should any person reach into or enter equipment enclosures for the purpose of servicing or adjusting equipment except in the presence of personnel capable of rendering aid.

An injury, no matter how slight, should never go unattended. Always obtain first aid or medical attention immediately.
ENERGIZED EQUIPMENT
Before working on energized equipment, ensure against grounding. If possible, make repairs/adjustments with one hand, leaving the other hand clear of the equipment. Never work alone.
MOVING EQUIPMENT
If equipment must be repaired/adjusted while in motion, a safety watch shall be posted. The safety watch must have a full view of the repair/adjustment operation and immediate access to controls that can stop the equipment in motion.
SPECIFIC SAFETY NOTICES
The specific safety warnings and cautions summarized below appear in appropriate chapters of this manual.
Each is referenced to the text page on which it appears.
A WARNING is an operating or maintenance procedure, practice, condition or statement which, if not strictly observed, could result in injury or death to personnel.
A CAUTION is an operating or maintenance procedure, practice, condition or statement which, if not strictly observed, could result in damage to, or destruction of, equipment or loss of mission effectiveness.
xi
The following warnings and cautions appear in the text of this volume and are repeated here for emphasis.
WARNING
To prevent injury or death, make available appropriate fire fighting equipment and take nec-essary safeguards before taking on fuel. (Page 4-3)
To prevent injury or death, immediately mop up and clean all spillage. (Page 4-3)
To prevent injury or death from an explosion, do not use starting aids such as ether.
(Page 4-5)
To prevent injury, exercise caution to ensure legs and feet do not become entangled in the anchor line while the line is paying out. (Page 4-6)
To prevent injury or death when initiating the emergency stopping procedures, warn all boat personnel as soon as possible. (Page 4-10)
Towing procedures can be very hazardous, particularly in a seaway or in adverse weather.
All personnel must work with caution and remain alert for unsafe conditions. All boat per-sonnel shall wear life jackets. Additional safety precautions may be dictated by the situation.
(Page 4-11)
To prevent injury or death, ensure all personnel remain clear of the bow or stern while con-ducting towing operations. When being towed or towing, the towing line is subject to mod-erate to heavy strain and may part. (Page 4-11)
To prevent injury or death, ensure the engine is secured and the battery disconnect switch turned off. Tag OUT-OF-SERVICE. (Page 6-7)
To prevent injury or death, ensure extreme care and proper lifting devices are used during handling. The equipment is heavy. (Page 6-9)
Ensure only 24'/7-meter RIB slings are used for shipboard hoisting, lowering and stowage of the RIB. (Page 8-1)
Except in an emergency, do not exceed the RIB’s hoisting weight of 2540 kilograms (5600 lbs) when lowering or hoisting. Note: this represents a six person load. (Page 8-3)
To prevent injury, the hoisting ring must be tended during launching operations. The davit release hook automatically drops the hoisting ring when the load is removed. (Page 8-3)
Do not pull the arming cable on the automatic sling release hook at any time while hoisting the boat. (Page 8-3)
CAUTIONS
The seawater strainer and hose to the engine's seawater pump should be full of water when-ever the boat is launched and started prior to reaching the water. A continuous supply of water should flow through the engine whenever it is operating. (Page 3-8)
Fuel tank stripping should be done on a daily basis; before running the engine and before filling the tank. Failure to remove water will cause engine damage. (Page 4-3)
The inflatable tube must be properly inflated at all times; if not, damage to the inflatable tube can result from both over-inflation and under-inflation. Do not use a pressurized system; the manual tube inflation pump (as listed in Table 8-2) must be the only means used to inflate the tube compartments. (Page 4-4)
After an aborted start attempt, do not initiate a restart until the starter motor stops rotating.
Serious damage can result if the switch is turned before the starter motor has come to a com-plete stop. (Page 4-5)
Do not race the engine immediately after starting. Cold oil will not flow rapidly and oil star-vation to critical components could result. (Page 4-5)
To prevent damage to equipment, do not shift into reverse until the engine has returned to idle speed. (Page 4-6)
To prevent damage to equipment, do not operate astern at engine rpm greater than 1200.
(Page 4-6)
When approaching piers or other craft, be alert for sharp objects such as nails and pipes;
these can damage the inflatable tube. (Page 4-6)
Do not overrun the anchor line while lowering the anchor. To do so may foul the anchor line in the propeller. (Page 4-6)
Use only the prescribed antifreeze in the engine. Specific fluid type information is provided in the planned maintenance documentation for the boat. The use of any other antifreeze can have a damaging effect on nonmetallic components of the cooling system or the desired boil-ing point of the fluid. (Page 4-7)
If the boat remains waterborne, never place the battery disconnect switch or the bilge pump switch in the OFF position unless provisions are made to periodically pump the bilges.
(Page 4-8)
To prevent damage to equipment, never shut the battery disconnect switch off until the en-gine is secured. (Page 4-8) xii
CAUTIONS - (contd)
To prevent damage to equipment, maintain the antifreeze concentration between 30 and 67 percent. Solutions of less than 30 percent concentration do not provide sufficient corrosion protection. Concentrations greater than 67 percent adversely affect freezing point, boiling point, and heat transfer rates. (Page 4-8)
Operate the boat at reduced speeds when steering with the emergency tiller. (Page 4-9)
To prevent damage to equipment, do not shift into reverse until the boat has come off plane and the engine has returned to idle speed. (Page 4-10)
Do not operate boat in reverse at engine speeds in excess of 1200 engine rpm. (Page 4-11)
While towing, observe engine water temperature. If the temperature rises above safe limits, reduce speed until the temperature is acceptable. (Page 4-11)
Do not use mooring bitts for towing. (Page 4-11)
Exercise care when removing the cover to ensure the gasket is not lost or torn. (Page 6-2)
Ensure the engine is not running when replacing the filter element, as it will suck air into the fuel system. (Page 6-2)
Loss of steering will occur if the relief valve screws are not closed. When securing these screws with a wrench, do not apply heavy force or damage to the screw and relief valve will result. (Page 6-4)
To prevent damage to equipment, ensure the RIB is out of the water; flooding may occur.
(Page 6-8)
It is particularly important to properly bleed the coolant system and the fuel system. Failure to do so will result in engine damage. (Page 6-10)
The seawater pump will fail and the engine will overheat if the seawater pump supply hose is not submerged in water during the entire emergency dewatering procedure. (Page 7-2)
When the bilge drain plug is removed, place a warning tag on the coxswain’s station to re-mind the next operator to reinstall the drain plug before the boat is put into the water.

1-1 which in turn is coupled to a remote outdrive via a shaft extension assembly. The boat has Glass Rein-forced Plastic (GRP) structure with an inflatable tube mechanically fastened to the GRP structure. The boat is compatible with the slewing arm davit and a vari-ety of other single-arm davits rated for the boat’s hoisting weight.
