Propulsion Systems Evaluation Facility

Rotor Spin Facility Slip Ring Instrumentation Support

Statement of Work

PID

A. Background

A modification to a gas turbine engine blade dovetail coating process has required that qualification testing be performed to evaluate its performance. A low cycle fatigue spin test was performed earlier in the program and now a high cycle fatigue spin test is being run. In preparation for fully instrumented testing, strain gages will need to be applied to the rotor so that blade vibrations as measured by the gages can be correlated to blade vibrations measured by non-contact stress measurement sensors.

The contractor will be required to apply dynamic strain gages to the test rotor at locations on the blade as specified in the attachment. A total of 14 dynamic strain gages (SGs) and two resistance thermal detectors (RTDs) are to be applied to the rotor as specified in this document and the attachment. Lead wires shall be applied to the rotor to connect each of the individual gages to the slip ring. In order to facilitate wire routing from these gages to the facility slip ring, the rotor shall be modified to allow for wiring to pass from the rotor blades to the rotor bore and into the spin test arbor. The rotor modification plan shall conform to the plan approved by the test team and included in the attachment.

Buildup of the rotor during instrumentation will be necessary during the instrumentation process. Navy personnel can be available at the Aerodyn site to facilitate the assembly. The Navy shall provide all assembly hardware including rotor components, fasteners and adaptive tooling. The contractor shall provide any instrumentation supplies including SGs, RTDs, lead wire and expendables needed to fasten the instrumentation to the rotor.

The contractor shall have experience routing and securing wires in a high-G rotating environment to ensure maximum operating life of the instrumentation. The contractor must be familiar with slip ring installations including landing instrumentation onto a 100-channel slip ring. The contractor shall travel to NAS Patuxent River to perform the slip ring landing in place on the test assembly.

B. Primary Features:

Item
Description
CLIN 0001
Test Rotor Modification Machining

Salient Characteristics

1. The rotor shall be shipped to the contractor fully disassembled. The contractor shall modify the test rotor as per the pre-approved drawings (see attached) as needed for the routing of instrumentation lead wires from the blade positions to the slip ring.

CLIN 0002
Rotor Instrumentation

Salient Characteristics

1. The contractor shall install the instrumentation on the rotor per Spin Test Instrumentation ROM Request presentation attached. It includes the installation of a total of (14) strain gages and (2) RTDs on two compressor stages.

2. Six 350 Ω dynamic strain gages shall be installed at a single location on blades 5, 9, 12, 16, 21, 26 of stage 1. See attachment.

3. Eight 350 Ω dynamic strain gages shall be installed at two locations on blades 3, 12, 22 & 28 of stage 2. See attachment.

4. Two 3-wire Resistive Thermal Detectors (RTDs) shall be installed. One on blade 26 of stage 1 and one on blade 12 on stage 2. See attachment.

5. Instrumentation leads shall be routed through the arbor with at least 36” of wire available to pass through the drive shaft and connect to the slip ring. The rotor shall be returned to the Navy full assembled minus the drive shaft.

CLIN 0003
Ship Instrumented Rotor to NAS Patuxent River

Salient Characteristics

1. The contractor will be responsible to package and ship the rotor assembly with accompanying instrumentation to NAS, Patuxent River. Packaging will be designed to prevent damage to the rotor or its instrumentation.

CLIN 0004
Connection of Instrumentation Leads to Slip Ring IBA

Salient Characteristics

1. The contractor shall be responsible to prepare the instrumentation leads including maintaining wire identification, cutting them to length and stripping away sufficient wire insulation to make the connection to the slip ring circuit board. There are expected to be 28 strain gage leads and 6 RTD leads.

2. The contractor will route and secure the wires in the IBA in order to withstand the g-forces associated with rotation to no less than 12,600 rpm. This can involve epoxy, tack strapping or an equivalent method to ensure sufficient strain relief on the wires and solder joints.

3. The contractor will solder the wires to the IBA circuit board solder tabs following practices recommended by the slip ring manufacturer. The pin out scheme will be provided by the Navy prior to the start of the job.

C. Deliverables

Deliverables to be provided by the vendor will include:
