Requirement’s Statement
Hot Isostatic Press Semi-Automated Canister Machine Department of Physics
Naval Postgraduate School
1.0 Background/Introduction:
Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) requires a semi-automated canister production machine that will produce metal canisters for use in the existing Hot Isostatic Press (HIP) at NPS made by American Isostatic Presses, Inc. The existing HIP is an AIP6-30H, and NPS requires that the canister production system be compatible with the existing system. The semi-automated canister production machine aids in safely preparing metal canisters, evacuated with a vacuum pump and filled with powders, which can then be crimped and loaded into the HIP for compaction to full density. This canister production device supports several ongoing NPS efforts on production of reactive materials for the Office of Naval Research, Air Force Office of Scientific Research, and Defense Threat Reduction Agency.
2.0 Minimal Technical Requirements/Salient Characteristics:
NPS requires a semi-automated canister production machine with the following characteristics:
1. Compatible (both in the canisters produced and in the control of the machine) with the existing NPS hot isostatic press produced by American Isostatic Presses, Inc.
2. Contained, safe TIG welder within the system for production of steel, aluminum, and copper canisters.
3. Must be able to produce canisters of diameter 100mm or larger from steel, aluminum, or copper.
4. Must be able to pull sufficient vacuum on the canister to allow effective HIP consolidation, and must have a mechanism for automatically crimping the vacuum canister.
5. Must have a heater or other mechanism in addition to the vacuum pump to remove any moisture from the canister/powder system. Heater must accommodate the 100mm cans.
6. Must have controls for adjusting the heater and vacuum pump setup.
7. Must be self-contained in a cabinet system.
8. Must operate on 240 or 480 V.
