SECTION SF 1449 - CONTINUATION SHEET
The following have been modified:
STATEMENT OF WORK:
STATEMENT OF WORK
USS FLASHER SS-249 SAIL
1.0 INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this order is for the refurbishment and maintenance of the USS Flasher (SS-249) sail.
2.0 BACKGROUND
Per visual Inspection of the Sail on 3/22/22 the issues identified in the Progeny Assessment July, 2009 have continued to deteriorate. The interior rust has progressed significantly. Water entering from above requires improved drainage. Structural steel blasting and reinforcement outlined in the Progeny Assessment has not been done. As part of the refurbishment effort, an additional assessment will need to be done following the removal of paint, rust scale, foam insulation, and Inspection of any places to trap water and deterioration where water has been leaking into the structure for the last 13 years since the Progeny Assessment. The current visual Inspection identified the following:
Some of the vertical and horizontal rectangular steel tube support structures will need to be replaced as they have lost significant strength. Numerous leaks have been identified on the upper deck of the sail; some are around bolts. The newer steel plate under the gun mounts appears to be in satisfactory condition, though further inspection will be necessary once the deteriorated plate below the new plate has been removed. A fiberglass/ corrosion resistant vinylester laminate over the upper steel deck will protect the steel and prevent water intrusion into the interior spaces.
Exterior Urethane topcoat paint needs to be reapplied to improve aesthetics and ensure visual color match to newly applied paint.
