Section C - Descriptions and Specifications

SPECIFICATIONS

Differential Image Motion Monitor (DIMM) for the United States Naval Observatory, Flagstaff Station

GENERAL INFORMATION:

1. Description: Differential Image Motion Monitor (DIMM) System

2. BACKGROUND:

The United States Naval Observatory, Flagstaff Station (NOFS) seeks to acquire a Differential Image Motion Monitor (DIMM) system to test the atmospheric seeing conditions at a southern hemisphere sites for the possible deployment of USNO telescope(s). Atmospheric seeing is arguably the single-most important parameter used to describe site quality for a ground-based telescope. The DIMM (or a comparable) system will need to operate remotely with minimal human interaction and provide nightly atmospheric seeing data to USNO accessible via the internet. Other southern hemisphere seeing monitors are under development, but they are not compatible with the latitude of our proposed test site (~20d south). USNO is required to provide dedicated astrometry and photometry of celestial objects to DoD under DoD Instruction 4650.06, “DoD PNT Management”. The development of a DIMM system described here falls under the purview of this Instruction.

4. SPECIFICATIONS:

The DIMM will be comprised of an imaging camera mounted on a 300 mm aperture Cassegrain focus telescope. The system will be automated, computer controlled with an auto-guider to find and acquire bright stars throughout the night. The system will include all software necessary to determine the seeing conditions and to provide this data in a usable format remotely (via internet). A dome with an auto-closure capability is required to close the dome in the event of adverse weather conditions. The system should be robust, run with minimal or no human interaction after initial set-up and operate autonomously.

The following basic requirements for the system are outlined below:

a. 300 mm (f/8) aperture RC type optical tube assembly (OTA).

b. Standard robotic mount for the telescope capable of functioning in the southern hemisphere. Counterweights, CMOS centering camera, camera adaptor, all cables.

c. Electronic guide camera

c. DIMM software module for fully stand alone operations.

d. Prism wedge kit mask to include anodized aluminum double hole mask.

e. DIMM camera (1600 x 1200 pixels), gigabit ethernet output, 20 frames per second.

f. Computer for DIMM seeing monitor system.

g. Two meter dome to house the telescope and DIMM system.

h. Dome computer interfacing

i. 12” base riser ring.
