REFRACTIVITY STUDY SUPPORT HYPERSONIC WIND TUNNEL TESTING
STATEMENT OF WORK (SOW)
1.0 BACKGROUND
The purpose of this work is to investigate signal loss of radio frequencies through a hypersonic flow field as a proof-of-concept of the occurrence of wave refraction. Naval Surface Warfare
Center Division Dahlgren (NSWCDD) will be the lead for this effort providing all radio frequency equipment needed for testing, the test plan, and test report. The NSWCDD requires
Virginia Tech to assist in the testing. The outcome of this work will increase our understanding of an experimental approach to studying and phenomena of radio frequency propagation through a hypersonic flow field.
2.0 APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS
This work expands upon previous experimental and computational efforts in studying hypersonic fluid-thermal-structure-interaction utilizing previous computational work, test set up, test model design and fabrication, and test data developed under Delivery Order Contract N0017813D1031, Delivery Order N0017818FD474.
3.0 SCOPE OF WORK
3.1 The contractor shall collaborate with NSWCDD to prepare for RF (radio frequency) propagation in Virginia Tech’s hypersonic wind tunnel.
3.1.1 The contractor shall modify wind tunnel test section and test fixture for RF propagation.
3.1.2 The contractor shall provide modification of Wind Tunnel Test Section for RF propagation:
3.2 The contractor shall provide Instrumentation and Test Set Up as follows:
3.2.1 The contractor shall support implementation of sensor and diagnostic hardware into the test fixture design.
3.2.2 The contractor shall provide shadowgraph set up and instrumentation.
3.3 The contractor shall provide test model fabrication as follows:
3.3.1 The contractor shall provide 3D printed tunnel test models from provided solid works files prior to first series of scheduled testing.
3.3.2 The contractor shall support two test geometries utilized during testing.
3.4 The contractor shall provide Wind Tunnel operation and testing as follows:
3.4.1 The contractor shall coordinate with NSWCDD TPOCs to ensure that no less than one (1)
Government personnel is present at testing.
3.4.2 The contractor shall coordinate with NSWCDD TPOCs for pre-test planning and to establish measurement criteria, define performance metrics, and evaluate test data.
3.4.3 The contractor shall operate the wind tunnel during testing.
3.4.4 The contractor shall configure the wind tunnel to support testing.
3.4.5 The contractor shall provide use of wind tunnel for testing for up to three (3) different test series. Intent is to learn from each testing to improve test set up and design.
3.5 The contractor shall coordinate with the technical points of contact identified below to accomplish this work.
4.0 PLACE OF PERFORMANCE
Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA
5.0 PERIOD OF PERFORMANCE
The period of performance is six (6) months after receipt of the order.
6.0 DATA DELIVERABLES
The contractor shall provide data IAW CDRL A001.
7.0 ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA
This is a collaborative effort between Virginia Tech and NSWCDD to propagate radio frequencies through a hypersonic flow field as a proof-of-concept of the occurrence of wave refraction.
8.0 TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
No travel is required.
9.0 SECURITY
All work to be performed under this SOW is unclassified.
