About this file

This Statement of Need (SOW) from the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) solicits a high-frequency acoustics system for optomechanical signal processing. The procurement includes two key hardware components: a 4-input multichannel multimode switch (HF-MULTICHAN) and a PCIe extension card with software that enables wavelength setpoint configuration and active stabilization for up to four lasers. These items will be compatible with an existing Toptica WS6-600 wavemeter and are intended to generate and control a coherent optical source with a beat frequency exceeding 100 GHz, which is critical for elastic wave generation and signal processing in the Extremely High Frequency (30-300 GHz) range.

The contract (N0017326Q5604) specifies a 16-week performance period, with delivery to Code 7130 at 4555 Overlook Ave. SW, Washington DC 20375, addressed to Andrea Graves. The vendor must provide hardware that is fully functional upon delivery, as the items will be inspected and must be in complete working order to be accepted by NRL. The system's primary objective is to enable thermoelastic actuation for nano-acoustic cavities and provide a local oscillator signal for down-converting optical responses from vibrating nanostructures in the 100 GHz range.

STATEMENT OF NEED

TITLE: High Frequency Acoustics for Optomechanical Signal Processing

I. Purpose

The proposed multichannel switch and PID laser frequency stabilization system, integrated with the existing Toptica WS6-600 wavemeter and tunable diode lasers, will enable the generation and control of a coherent optical source with a beat frequency exceeding 100 GHz. This beat signal is critical for providing either thermoelastic actuation for nano-acoustic cavities or a local oscillator signal. The latter is necessary for down-converting optical responses from vibrating nanostructures—specifically from the 100 GHz range into a baseband accessible to high-speed photodetectors.

This capability is essential to the current program's objective: establishing a novel approach for elastic wave generation, confinement, and readout in the Extremely High Frequency (EHF, 30–300 GHz) range to enable signal processing in the optical-mechanical (OM) domain.

II. Scope

The vendor will provide the hardware items below.

1. Multichannel option multimode switch, 4-inputs HF-MULTICHAN

2. PCIe extension card and software allowing to set a wavelength setpoint and provide active stabilization of up to four lasers.

Both items provide compatibility with the existing wavemeter WS6-600.

III. Period of Performance

16 weeks after award

IV. Delivery Location

Shipment of deliverable items specified in the Scope of Work shall be delivered to the following address:

Code 7130

4555 Overlook Ave. SW

Washington DC 20375

Attention: Andrea Graves

V. Inspection and Acceptance Criteria

The items listed in the scope of this document must be received and in full working order to be accepted as final by NRL
