About this file
This document is a Request for Information (RFI) for a High Performance Computing (HPC) system to support scientific computing, specifically Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), for the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) Code 8200.
The key requirements include at least 28 compute nodes with 48 processors per node, 2 login/head nodes, 1 storage node, appropriate networking, power, cooling, and software. Specific salient characteristics are detailed in Attachment A1. NRL is seeking a turn-key solution that will be delivered, installed, and immediately operational at their facility. Respondents are requested to provide capability statements addressing the specified requirements, including details on how the proposed solution meets or exceeds the requirements, product descriptions, past performance, availability on existing contract vehicles, and other pertinent information. Responses are due within 15 days of the RFI posting. This RFI is for market research and procurement planning purposes only; it is not a solicitation and will not result in a contract award.

2024 NRL HPC Expansion Requirements Document
NRL code 8200 is acquiring a high performance computing system for scientific computing;
computational fluid dynamics, structural dynamics and thermal dynamics. The HPC shall have the following features:
• Compute Nodes:
o At least 28 compute nodes
Intel Xeon comparable or better o Four nodes per 2U chassis rackmount, with at least 48 cores per node o At least 1024 GB of RAM per compute node (DDR5 4800 MHz or better) o At least 7TB SSD storage per node o Power:
Redundant power supplies with power rating specified.
o Cooling:
Air Cooled o Networking:
1x 1GbE Dedicated IPMI or better 2x 10 GbE or better 1x 100Gb/s HDR or better o Form Factor:
2U Rackmount per 4 nodes o Include estimate to add individual compute nodes, up to the 42U configuration limit.
Nodes configured as described in this “Compute Nodes” section.
• Login/Head Nodes:
o 2x head nodes
Intel Xeon comparable or better o 256 GB of RAM per node or better (DDR5 4800 MHz or better) o At least 96 TB of storage
Must be configured in RAID 5 o NOTE:
prefer Login/head node to match compute node, but not required.
o Power:
Redundant power supplies with power rating specified.
o Cooling:
Air Cooled o Networking:
1x 1GbE Dedicated IPMI or better 2x 10 GbE or better 1x 100Gb/s HDR or better Ability to connect login nodes and Head/Admin node to NRL internal network using Juniper SRX 1500
* A Juniper SRX 1500 should be provided. U.05/22/2024 o Form Factor:
2U Rackmount
• Storage Node:
o 1x Storage array node
Intel Xeon comparable or better o 128 GB of RAM per node or better (DDR5 4800 MHz or better) o At least 96 TB of storage Must be configured in RAID 5 o Power:
Redundant power supplies with power rating specified.
o Cooling:
Air Cooled o Networking:
1x 1GbE Dedicated IPMI or better 2x 10 GbE or better 1x 100Gb/s HDR or better o Form Factor:
2U Rackmount
• System Software:
o CentOS with desktop environment installed o Bright Cluster Manager or similar software o Slurm job scheduler or similar software installed o Intel, GCC, OpenMPI, and MPICH installed
• System Networking:
o Mellanox Quantum HDR InfiniBand Switch or better o 48 port 1G Ethernet ToR
Management switch or better o 48 port 10G BASE-T switch or better
* Redundancy is not needed for the IB switches. U.05/22/2024
• System Power:
o 208 V 3-phase power o PDUs must make use of existing Liebert APM UPS o
System must have sufficient power redundancy o Provide estimate of power usage o Existing room is NOT a raised floor, PDU cables must exit the top of the system
• System Cooling:
o Networking and power cables must be arranged to ensure adequate cooling for system o Must be cooled with existing Liebert DCP coolant pumping unit o Liebert DCD active cooled (with fans) chilled water door or similar to cool HPC rack o Provide estimate of required cooling
• Miscellaneous o 42U Rack, 800x1200mm fully assembled with leveling feet o Build and Test system before delivery to NRL o Deliver and Fully install high performance computer into existing NRL facility o KVM/Keyboard Connection
* The SMC should configure this so that the keyboard & monitor can connect to any of the compute/head/login nodes by USB and/or VGA. However they accomplish this in terms of ports or connection types is fine with us
• Support o 3 years warranty on all hardware o 3 years support on all hardware o Provide on-site training of cluster management software o Run LINPACK after system has been installed on site for at least 24 hours without any errors
Solicitation Q&A: updated 05/22/2024
1. For all systems (computes + head nodes + storage, only 1x 100Gb/s HDR or better is requested. But from the L10 Compute BOM, we’re providing a 2-port HDR/200GbE.
Do they want redundancy?
2. They listed the Juniper SRX 1500 (below), please confirm if this is their existing Juniper appliance or they want SMC to provide this appliance?
3. They listed the KVM/Keyboard Connection (below), please confirm if this is their existing KVM/Keyboard Connection or they want SMC to provide it?
sQ&A Response: updated 05/22/2024
1. Redundancy is not needed for the IB switches.
2. A Juniper SRX 1500 should be provided.
3. In regard to the “KVM/Keyboard Connection” The SMC should configure this so that the keyboard & monitor can connect to any of the compute/head/login nodes by USB and/or VGA. However they accomplish this in terms of ports or connection types is fine with us.
