1. Introduction
The Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) at Washington DC has a need to replace a Well Irradiator System – including the radioactive sources. Well Irradiator System is required to be capable of performing calibrations in accordance with (IAW) the standards set forth National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements Report No.112 – Calibration of Survey Instruments Used in Radiation Protection for the Assessment of Ionizing Radiation Fields and Radioactive Surface Contamination, ANSI N42.17A – Performance Specifications for Health Physics Instrumentation - Portable Instrumentation for Use in Normal Environmental Conditions, and ANSI N323 – Radiation Protection Instrumentation Test and Calibration.
2. Description
The contractor shall remove and replace NRL’s existing Well Irradiator System and Sealed Sources. The contractor shall design, deliver, and install a Well Irradiator System and sealed sources for NRL’s existing two wells. The existing wells are 10 inches in diameter and 20 feet deep, and in Building 83 Room 108 the ceiling/roof above the wells has no access port available. The design of the system shall minimize scatter (e.g. clear air path from source to detector platform, no platform material in-between detector chamber and source) and shall not require the demolition of the existing well or building structure (well and building structure shall remain intact).
3. Requirements
